James Spruell Callaway Family

     James Spruell Callaway born 9 June 1826 Conecuh County, Alabama; died 31 Aug 1864 in the Battle of Jonesboro, Georgia during the Civil War. He is buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Jonesboro, Ga. He was the son of Clement Callaway II and Anna Elizabeth Spruell probably the daughter of Stephen Spruell of Georgia.

     James married Eliza Rosetta 'Rose' Nelson 14 Feb 1850, Baldwin County, Alabama. She was born 8 Dec 1830 Marengo County, Alabama; died 19 Oct 1920 Baldwin County, Alabama. She was the daughter of Rev. Elisha Nelson the son of Joseph A. Nelson, Sr. and Abigail Styron; and Elizabeth 'Eliza' Jane Nelson the daughter of Clifford Fulford and Alice Ann Fulford the daughter of Capt. John Fulford and Abigail Williston, Clifford was the son of James Fulford and Patience. They had eight children.

Eliza Ann Callaway born 9 Feb 1851 Montrose, Baldwin County, Ala., died 4 July 1930 Gulf Shores, Baldwin County, Alabama; married Rufus Brown Callaway, first cousins, born 9 Aug 1858 Bromley, Baldwin County, Alabama; died 9 June 1918 Gulf Shores, Baldwin County, Alabama, the son of John Green Callaway and Margaret Ann Cain. They had eight children.

  2. Elisha Clement 'Clem' Callaway born 21 Oct 1852 Montrose, Baldwin County, Alabama; died 19 May 1922 Lagoon, Gulf Shores, Baldwin County, Alabama. He married 7 July 1875 at the Lagoon, Gulf Shores, Baldwin County, Alabama; Mary Elizabeth Wallace born 20 Oct 1849 Enterprise, dark County, Mississippi; died 30 July 1937 Lagoon, Gulf Shores, Baldwin County, Alabama the daughter of Alien L. Wallace and Anna Grice. They had six children.

  3. Capt. James 'Jim' Clifford Callaway born 28 Feb 1854 Montrose, Baldwin County, Alabama; died 12 Oct 1917 Orange Beach, Baldwin County, Ala. married11 Nov 1875 Gasque, Baldwin County, Alabama; Ellen Childress died 23 Mar 1942 Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama the daughter of William Childress of Alabama and Mary Carolina Ward the daughter of Elijah Ward and Sarah "Sally" Ann Cochran the daughter of Rev. William Cochran of Virginia in American Revolution, served at Valley Forge. They had 11 children.

Alice Virginia Callaway born 2 Jan 1856 Montrose, Baldwin County, Ala. died 13/31/ July 1921 Lagoon, Gulf Shores, Baldwin County, Alabama; married 8 Aug 1873 Baldwin County, Alabama, William Star Wallace born 25 May 1842 Enterprise, dark County, Mississippi, died 20 Nov 1922 Lagoon, Gulf Shores, Baldwin County, Alabama, the son of Alien L. Wallace and Anna Grice. They had 11 children. Lurleen Clopton's lineage.

  5. Andrew 'Fuller' Callaway born 25 Oct 1857 Montrose, Baldwin County, Alabama; died 1935 Bon Secour, Baldwin County, Alabama; married 26 Nov 1884 Gertrude Arabella Ewing; died 1906 Shell Banks, Baldwin County, Alabama. They had seven children.

  6. Serena Cochran Callaway born 18 July 1859 Montrose, Baldwin County, Alabama; died Nov 1878 Baldwin County, Alabama of yellow fever. She was working away from home for the Ard family, became ill and died.

  7. Samuel Washington Callaway born 8 Aug 1961 Montrose, Baldwin County, Alabama; died 18 Apr 1865 Baldwin County, Alabama at age 3.

  8. Susan 'Susie' Elizabeth Callaway born 11 July 1864 Lagoon, Gulf Shores, Alabama; died 8/18 Mar 1928 Lagoon, Gulf Shores, Alabama; married 22 Dec 1897 Baldwin County, Alabama, John Gilbert 'Gib' Shelby, Jr. born 14 Sept 1864 in Florida; died 23 Mar 1940. They had eight children. Parents of Mary Alice Shelby Lewis and Serena Cochran Shelby Callaway. They were lovely ladies, walking history books, and I loved them both very much.
