Mobile Press Register, Wednesday, February 8, 1905
"The body of the late Captain Thomas Benton, who was drowned some weeks ago, was found floating in the bay Monday afternoon, between Mullet Point and Fish river, by Elisha and H. Nelson, on the schooner Puritan of Bon Secour. They pulled it on deck and took it to Bon Secour, his home. ... The tug Eleanor, of which he was in command at the time of his death, left yesterday with a casket, and the funeral will take place to-day from his late residence."
