January 18th, 2000 Edition


JOHNNIE B. HALL


Johnnie B. Hall, 59, Elba, died Sunday, January 16, 2000, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Coleman Funeral Home in Elba.


JOHN DANIEL "DAN" JOHNSON


John Daniel "Dan" Johnson, 66, died Tuesday, December 7, 1999, at Lakeview Community Hospital in Eufala. Services were held Thursday, December 9, 1999, at 3 p.m. at Parkview Baptist Church in Eufala. Burial followed in Memory Gardens in Eufala with Chapman Funeral Home of Eufala directing.

He was the son of Edward Daniel Johnson and Sara Eldora Westbrook Johnson.

He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. He was a mason and shriner; served the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years. He was a pharmacist and member of Alabama Pharmacist Association and The Wiregrass Pharmacist Association.

Survivors othen his mother include: his wife, Verlon Johnson; sons, Michael Johnson of Troy, Patrick Johnson of Savannah, Jim Martin of Vicksburg, Mississippi; daughter, Lynn Welch of Skippersville and Dana Lea of Athens, Georgia; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers: , Jim Scarborough, Sr., Jim Scarborough, Jr., Bob Scarborough, John Byars, Tim Shaw, and William White.

JAMES CHESTER HENDERSON


James Chester Henderson, 51, Daleville, died in an automobile accident on Sunday, January 16, 2000.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 22, in Panama City, Florida. Sconiers Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements.


ESTELLE DENNIS HITCH


Estelle Dennis Hitch, 88, Enterprise, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, at her home in Enterprise.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, January 21, at the Firs Presbyterian Church of Thibodaux, Louisiana. Local arrangements by Searcy Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at Landry's Funeral Home in Thibodaux from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 20.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Coffee County Adult Daycare Center, 106 Douglas Brown Circle, Enterprise, Alabama 36330, or Alzheimer's Association, 919 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 1000, Chicago, Illinois 60611.

Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Evelyn Hitch, Enterprise; three sisters, Emily Rodrigue, Pearl George, and Lottie Soignet, all of Thibodaux Louisiana; two brothers, Michael Dennis, and Clyde Dennis, bothof Thibodaux, Louisiana; two grandchildren, Hillary Hitch Enterprise, and Mitch Hiiych, Indianapolis, Indiana.


TALLIE C. IVEY


Tallie C. Ivey, 94, Enterprise, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, in Enterprise.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, January 20, from the chapel of Searcy Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel Lolley officiating. Burial will follow in the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends at Searcy Funeral Home tonight, Wednesday, January 19, from 6-8 p.m.

Mr. Ivey was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie Maude Ivey, and a daughter, Elouise McGhee.

Surivors include: four sons and daughter-in-law, Billy and Lorene Ivey, Enterprise, Amdy and Nell Ivey, Elba, Cecil and Mildred Ivey, Ozark, and Amos and Mary Ivey, Ozark; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, January 19, from the chapel of Searcy Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadownlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

The family will received at Searcy Funeral Home Wednesday, January 19, from 10 a.m. to noon.




January 20th, 2000 Edition


MIKE LEON BRUNSON


Mike Leon Brunson, 62, of Elba, died Wednesday, January 19, 2000, at Elba Nursing Home.

Services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery today, Thursday, January 20, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Baxter officiating. Visitation will be today from 10-11 a.m. at Hayes Funeral Home.

Mike Leon Brunson was a lifelong resident pf Elba, a graduate of Elba High, attended Troy State University and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sollie and Nolie Blair Brunson of Elba and a son, Mike Shelley Brunson.


ETHEL R. HOWELL


Ethel R. Howell, 91, pf Enterprise, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, at Medical Center Enterprise.

Services will be held Friday, January 21, at 2 p.m. at New Home Baptist Church with the Rev Cliff Quincy officiating. Burial will follow at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Howell will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. The family will receive friends at Searcy Funeral Home tonight, Thursday, January 20, from 6-8 p.m.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Pauline H. Wilkinson of Enterprise; three grandchildren, Betty Ann Gibson of Enterprise, Clarence Hard Wilkinson, Jr. of North Carolina, and Susan Rebecca Wilkinson of Montgomery; nine great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchilren; and one brother, Boyd Harbuck.


TALLIE C. IVEY


Mr. Tallie C. Ivey, 94, of Enterprise, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, in Enterprise.

Services will be held today, Thursday, January 20, at 3 p.m. at Searcy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donald Lolley officiating. Burial will follow at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

Lemma C. Reese, Jr., 81, of Enterprise, died Monday, January 17, 2000, at Medical Center Enterprise.

Services will be held Monday, January 24, at 2 p.m. fom Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Naamon Wright and Rev. June Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Johns Chapel A.M.E.Church Cemetery with Sconiers Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at 517 Friendship Street in Enterprise.

BERTHA LEE HARRELSON


Bertha Lee Harrelson, 98, of Brantley, died Wednesday, January 20, 2000, at Crenshaw Baptist Medical Center.

Services will be held at Hayes Funeral Home Chapel today, Friday, January 21, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Elbert Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Beaverdam Church Cemetery in ELba with Hayes Funeral Home directing.

Ms. Harrelson was a lifelong resident of Coffee and Crenshaw counties. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Harrelson; three daughters, Eleanor Morgan, Jean Tew Pate, and Faye Harrelson; three grandchildren, John Glen Morgan, Terry Harrelson, and Bruce Harrelson; and two great-andchildren, Dustin Harrelson and Caleb Harrelson.

RUTH MAY


Ruth May, 78, of Enterprise, died Friday, January 21, 2000, at Medical Center Enterprise. Funeral will be held Tuesday, January 27 at 2 p.m. at the St. Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Enterprise with the Rev. Dr. Virgil J. Coleman officiating. Family hour will be on Wednesday, January 26, from 6-7 p.m. at St. Beulah. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Church Cemetery with Coleman Home directing.


VIRGINIA LOUISE RYAN


Virginia Louise Ryan, 84, of Enterprise, died early Monday morning, January 24, 2000 at the family residence after an extended illness.

A funeral mass wil be today, Januiary 25, at 10 a.m. from St. John's Catholic Church with Father Hugh McGuire officiating.

Mrs. Ryan was a native of Indiana having lived in Enterprise fpr a number of years. She was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church. She was a graduate of Franklin College in Indiana and a member of the Phi-Beta-Kappa Sorority. Flowers will be accepted or contribution could be made to Wiregrass Hospice, P.O. Box 311103, Enterprise, Alabama 36331.

Survivors include her husband, Terence Ryan of Enterprise; daughter, Salli Rogers (Roy) of Enterprise; step-daughter, Mary Marko of Framingham, Massachusetts; two sons, Steve Weaver (Ellie) of Boxboro, Massachusetts, and John D. Weaver (Rosalba) of Boca Raton, Florida; two step-sons, Terence Ryan, Jr. of Frederick, Virginia, Dennis Ryan of Gulf Breeze, Florida, Patrick Ryan of Lelua, Sweden, and James Ryan of Mesa, Arizona; one sister, Barbara Browning of Franklin, Indiana; 17 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.


January 26th, 2000 Edition


MR. ROY M. SHOFFNER


Mr. Roy M. Shoffner, 82, of Enterprise, died Tuesday, January 25, 2000, at Medical Center Enterprise.

Services will be held Thursday, January 27, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Enterprise with the Rev. Tim Floyd and Dr. Frank Wells officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Shoffner will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. The family will receive friends at Searcy Funeral Home tonight, Wednesday, January 26, from 6-8 p.m.

Survivs include his wife, Patricia O. Shoffner of Enterprise; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Brenda Shoffner of Walton Beach, Florida; two grandsons, Andrew Shoffner of Walton Beach, Florida, and Kevin Shoffner of Walton Beach, FLorida; two sosters, Nellie Mae French of Whitesville, Kentucky, and Mary Jane Howard of Crestview, Florida.

Mr. Shoffner was a former editor and publisher of the Enterprise Ledger, former Enterprise city councilman, and author of a popular history of Enterprise.

He was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky, on January 25, 1918. He served with the U.S. Army in Europe and Africa for three years during World War II, earning eight battle stars and a Purple Heart.

He moved to the Enterprise area in 1950 and worked for three years as director pf the Training Film Library at what was then Camp Rucker. He began working for the Enterprise Ledger in 1954. In 1955 he was named editor, then in 1977 he was appointed publisher. He retires in November 1984.

Mr. Shoffner served on the Enterprise City Council from 1964-1972. He was named Enterprise's Man of the Year in 1965. He also served on the Enterprise Planning Commission and the Enterprise Bicentennial Commission. He was general chairman of the Enterprise Diamond Jubilee and historical committee chairman of the Enterprise National Bicentennial. He was also active in the local chapter of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, the Enterprise Lions CLub and numerous other civic organizations and served seven times as president of the Pea River Historical and Genealogical Society.

He is the author of "Dateline: Enterprise," a memoir of his life in newspapers, and "Pest of Honor," a history of Enterprise's famous Boll Weevil Monument. In 1996 he published a history of the city itself, "Enterprise: The First 110 Years, 1882-1992."
