NOTE:  The identity of Stanton POWELL's parents is uncertain.  He may have been the son of E.A. POWELL and a Miss THOMPSON — the names inscribed on Stanton's death certificate by his second wife, Mrs. Winnie POWELL.  Winnie should have been able to correctly identify her mother-in-law, considering that the two women appear to have lived together for more than a decade.  Both were recorded in Stanton's household on the U.S. census in 1910 and 1920.  Listed as Eliza H. and Eliza, respectively, Stanton's mother was born about 1853 in Alabama.  Other evidence suggests that she was Eliza Hasseltine POWELL (1852-1925), also known as Hasseltine or "Puss" POWELL, a highly regarded midwife in the Bluff community.  More research is needed to resolve this matter.

Stanton attended school with his only sibling, Bertha Lee POWELL (1876-1948), at the Bluff school in the mid-1880s.  He was listed as a voter in Bluff in 1904.  Stanton remarried in 1909 and left Fayette County sometime after 1912.  The family lived in Oklahoma (Pittsburg and Seminole counties) before settling in Cameron Co., TX, about 1920.  Stanton A. POWELL was struck and killed by a car while he was walking home from work one evening in 1933.
