MyHUDSON ancestors immigrated from England to Virginia in 1635. Early generations lived in Accomack, Henrico, and Amelia Counties in Virginia. By the early 1800s these Hudsons were living in Franklin County, Alabama. In 1845 my great grandfather, Benjamin Wesley Hudson, married his first wife (Elizabeth J. ?) in Alabama, and she died in 1850 in Bradley County, Arkansas. Later that year, he was back in Franklin County, Alabama, and married Lousia J. ?. His third wife was Mary A.EVANS. After her death in about 1865, he married my ggrandmother, Hannah Roseanna EVANS in 1866, and the family was in Franklin Counry until just after Benjamin's death in 1881. Then they moved to Texas, to the Wynnewood, Oklahoma area, then finally to Bradley County, Arkansas, where I grew up. Other key surnames I am researching (almost all Arkansas-based) are Anderson, Carraway, Clements, Harrelson, Huitt, Lubbes, Wilkinson, and Williams. ARGYLE is the name of choice -- and it is NOT a surname. I am seeking families of (and formerly of) Franklin Co. that used the given name ARGYLE for any children born in the 1825 to 1900 period. ArgyleTAYLOR (born in the 1782 period probably in Burke Co. NC, died in 1823 in Franklin Co. AL) was a son of Permenas/Parmenas Taylor of Jefferson Co. TN. Argyle Taylor had several children before being murdered by a neighbor in 1823 -- and the only child whose name we know was Susan Taylor (born 1817), wife of GuilfordSTOCKS. Guilford and Susan Stocks used the name Argyle in their own child list, so it seems reasonable that other children, sons and daughters of Argyle Taylor, could well have used the name as well. Identifying the very few families that would use this name in that period could well be a start to fleshing out his child list. Any help in pointing to such use of the name Argyle would be greatly appreciated. --Carl

I'll push this through here, since there seems to be a problem passing this directly to Valley Leaves. Some time ago you made an attempt to sort out the early Taylor families of Farnklin. I can identify Argyle Taylor with absolute proof as the Argyle Taylor of Jefferson Co. TN, born probably in the 1782 period. He married Jane/Jennie Inman (daughter of Abednego) in 1805 Jefferson Co. TN (bond survives). He died in 1823 in Franklin, murdered by a neighbor the day following his [oldest?] daughter's wedding. Ezekiel Inman of Franklin was a brother of Argyle Taylor's wife Jane/Jennie and married Argyle's sister Matilda Inman, who remained in Franklin only briefly following her husband Ezekiel's ca. 1825 death. She then returned to the home of her father Permenas Taylor in Jefferson Co. TN before removing (as a widow with children) to Dubois Co. IN, home of her father's half-sister Hannah Rose (wife of Bazil Brooke Edmonston), earlier of Suury Co. NC, then Buncombe Co. NC. Argyle Taylor's widow is the Jane Taylor in the 1830 Franklin census. He has one absolutely identifiable child -- Susan Taylor, wife of Guilford Stocks (Baldwyn City Cem., Baldwyn MS). She is not the daughter whose marriage celebration precipitated Argyle Taylor's death. Abednego J. Taylor of the 1870 Lee Co. MS census seems destined to be a son of Argyle and Jane (Inman) Taylor. There were certainly other children, names unknown. --Carl   ArgyleTAYLOR in Franklin Co.

LillianWILSON, my grandmother, born March 26, 1866, the wife of Richard G.QUILLIN, my grandfather, migrated from Frankfort Al. circa 1880-1884. I have been unable to locate any information about her, her siblings if any, her parents, or any of her ancestry. Information handed down gives her maiden surname as WILSON. In the 1880 Franklin county census, there is listed a Lillian WILSON, 14 years old at the time, who was staying with aGATES family in or near Frankfort. Lillian was listed as a niece of Mr. or Mrs. GATES. I do not know if this Lillian WILSON was my grandmother. She mentioned that she suspected that some of her siblings perished in Galveston, TX. in a flood or hurricane circa 1900. She tried making contact later but was unsuccessful. Anyone who is related to or knows a relative, or who knows of any of her history or ancestry please contact me. There is an entire family of descendents who would love to meet our kin and/or learn of our maternal ancestry. Please help! Thanks.

There is a 27 year old female, four children ages 6, 4, 2, and 6 mo., and James P. age 16 and John A. age 12. These latter two are likely the children of M.J.'s first marriage to Mary Miller. I am looking for theCHAMBERS family that appear in the 1900 census for franklin Co. This family also married into the JACKSON family. Both families are listed in the census on pages 216,232,235,and 241. I am a decendant of William LeAnder CHAMBERS who is not listed because he was looking for land in Oklahoma. I believe that John and Mary CHAMBERS are William's parents. William married Doshe May Bell JACKSON who is only 11 years old in the census. In the 1920 census their family appears in Love County, OK. The JACKSON family moved to Alabama from Georgia. According to the 1900 census the CHAMBERS family was from Alabama which would date back to about 1800. If you have any information on the CHAMBERS family in Alabama please contact me.

IVEY / IVY - FRANKLIN CO, AL Are the 1860 census records still in existance? I am looking for residence info death place or any information on one Isaiah IVEY (my GGGgrandfather), wife Martha and sons Robert, Travis & Enos who (I was told by another Ivey researcher) were in Cherokee AL in 1860- I do not know for sure if was Cherokee Co or city of Cherokee in Franklin- now Colbert Co. I know they were in Marlboro SC in 1850. They all (except one older son) packed up and headed west from SC after 1850 and prior to 1857. The next oldest son Enoch IVEY (my GGgrandfather) went on further to DeSoto Co. MS and settled there by 1858. I know no more about what became of Isaiah and the others. Isaiah would have been 62 in 1860 so he probably died in AL. Maybe sons Robert , Travis & EnosIVEY (IVY ) show in later Cherokee Co records?? My grandmother (Tilda Susannah -Susie- NIX) who was the daughter of the Elija and Missouri was born in 1893. MissouriTAYLOR NIX was most likely from Georgia. I suppose the Texas, Arkansas or Oklahoma area. William Russell Murray is quite an interesting fellow. WRM' s Florida death certificate states that his father wasGEORGE MURRAY and his mother was MRS.RUSSELL and that both of them were born in North Carolina. His death certificate also clearly states that his full name wasWILLIAM RUSSELL MURRAY, he was born March 8, 1842 and that he died Jan. 4, 1923 in St. Cloud Florida where he had resided for approx. 6 years. The informant on the certificate was his second wife, Caroline Francis Murray and he was removed to and buried at South Pittsburg, Marion County, Tenn. It seems very clear that W. R. Murray had moved to St. Cloud as part of a "colony" of Union Army veterans who were getting very elderly and moved in mass to and basically founded that town which is now large a tourist town near Disney. In 1917, it was a very small agricultural community which had among its small citizenry over 800 former Yankee soldiers. The main occupation in St. Cloud was "constant gab", telling old Civil War stories and being involved in Patriotic Activities. St. Cloud had the second largest chapter of the "Grand Army of the Republic" in the entire Nation. William Russell Murray's Last Will was probated in Marion County Tenn. and in it he names his above wife, his daugthers Flora Anna Murray Mason and Nancy Caldonia (Dona) Murray Haskew and bequeaths to them his property including land in St. Cloud FLA and land in Marion County TN. Also very new is a record in a book entitled "Sequacthie Valley Soldiers in the Civil War" in which it is says that W. R. Murray's "home county" at the time of his enlistment into the Union Army in 1863 was Jackson County Alabama. I have to date been unable to find anything to confirm his home or presence there. Barbara Gonce Clepper, author of the book "The Raulstons and the Russells" which has many Marion County TN and Jackson County Ala. connections, stated by telephone that: she knew of a William Russell who she felt was the brother of her Thomas Russell, a revolutionary patriot for whom Russell Cave in Alabama was named for, and that she felt this William Russell was the brother of Thomas. She also stated that this William was a soldier under Andrew Jackson and the town of Russellville Ala. was named for him. I have no direct absolute knowledge that this William Russell is connected to William Russell Murray except that they have closely connected families and geography (Marion County Tenn and Jackson County Ala. are next door to each other and share many of the same people). Mrs. Clepper also stated that William Russell married Lydia Bean and the Beans/Beenes are very closely connected to William Russell Murray. THE FOCUS OF THIS POSTING: is to learn about George Murray, father of WRM and "Mrs. Russell" who is his mother. I would very much appreciate any and all help that anyone can give relative to these people and their parents, grandparents and further. MY GOAL IS TO: get the Murrays or the Russells back to Scotland, Ireland or England and have a kilt wearing, bagpipe playing member of the family. In order to provide some context relative to this posting I am including below text relative to William Russell Murray and his first wife gg grandmother Susannah Margaret (Susan) Bible Murray. My name is Barbara Garrett and I work at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. I would very much appreciate all help any can give me. Thanks, Best Regards, Barbara. "Blind Soldier- 2 Children" This is an interesting story. William R. Murray was a Southerner who enlisted in the Union Army in Nashville in 1863, Company I of the 10th Tenn. Infantry Regiment. Company I had "enrolled" at Battle Creek, Marion County Tennessee and this is the county where William's wife, Susan (Susannah Margaret) BIBLE, was born and grew up and where William lived most of his life. William R. Murray was born in ANSON COUNTY, NC, March 8, 1842. At the end of the War Between The States, his regiment is designated as "The Governor's Guard" in Nashville. William R. Murray is found in the hospital in Nashville on numerous occasions. Shortly after the war ends, (July 20, 1865), William R. Murray marries Susan Bible. His 1923 death notice in the South Pittsburg TN newspaper reveals that- shortly after his discharge from the Union Army- he loses his eyesight and then lived for nearly sixty years as a blind man. Meanwhile, back at the Battle Crick, his daughter Flora Anna Murray was born May 16, 1866 and his daughter Nancy Caldonia (Dona) Murray was born Dec. 23, 1868. Then on March 30, 1871, Susan Bible Murray died, leaving blind William R. Murray with two small baby daughters. We find daughter Anna at the age of 14, in the 1880 Marion County Census, being raised in District 9 of Marion County by her aunt LouisaBIBLE BEENE and her husband William Owen BEENE, along with their other 3 children. However, according to the family ofGEORGE WASHINGTON BIBLE andCATHERINE SPEEGLE BIBLE, their daughter LouisaBIBLE BEENE dies July 16, 1880, very soon after the 1880 census was completed. Flora Anna Murray marries Charles W.MASON and has 7 children and Nancy Caldonia (Dona) Murray marries SamuelHASKEW and has numerous children (7 in the 1900 Census). In the 1900 Census, William R. Murray is living as the spouse of C. F. Murray and next door to his 2 daughters (MASON and HASKEW) and their families in the Battle Creek area of Marion County. In 1923, we find the South Pittsburg Tennessee newspaper posting great great grandfather William R. Murray's death notice where it mentions that he had recently died in St. Cloud Florida, that he was an active Methodist, and that he was buried in theTATE Cemetery inTATE'S COVE, Battle Creek, Marion County Tennessee. Beg, Beg, Beg, Beg, Beg, Beg, Beg. I am endeavoring to find the parents, grandparents, g grandparents (and more extensive pedigree), and other family of William R. Murray. Is there any one reading this message who knows these people?

For a book for the LSU Press on north Alabama in the 1800's, I'am looking for oral history, clippings, or letters written to or byROBERT M.CLARK, origionally of Mt.Hope, Alabama before he moved to Russellville in the 1890's. He and his brother,JOHN of Mt. Hope lead the Agricultural Wheel, a farm-labor union in the late 1880's.I understand that R.M.'s son was also a prominent doctor in Russellville for some time. I'd like to communicate with a descendent who might know something of JOHN, R.M., orJAMES CLARK, who wrote north Alabama's dissent to the secession ordinance. All were sons of war of 1812 veteran John Clark, one of the original inhabitants of Moulton. Any help in locating desendents in the know would be greatly appreciated. Paul Horton

Trying to find any information on the family of James WilliamSULLIVAN. They were listed in the Franklin County Census in 1860, but I can't find any more information on them. I understand James was in the Civil War, was wounded and died shortly afterward. His widow and children remained in Franklin County and some were buried there. I believe my g-grandmother, Mary (Polly) was a child of this family. She had four children who went by the name of SULLIVAN and later in life married a man whose last name wasBURKS. A sister of Mary was Rachel who married Alfred Newton STEELE. They moved to Texas later. There was a brother, George and a sister who marriedBREWERS. The sister married Aldophus Brewer and they went to Tennessee. I don't know what happened to the rest of the family. I would greatly appreciate any information on this family.

My grandmother was Eunice Melonee Nelson, b: Feb 3, 1900 d: Apr 117, 1974 in Pine Bluff, AR. Supposedly, she was 1/2 Native American. She was also born in Winona, MS. Her father was Ervin Jessee Nelson and was called "Dewey." Ervin was b: Jan 13, 1875 supposedly in MS; however, I can find no record. Ervin's father was George W. Nelson and I believe he was from Alabama. The family has told me that Eunice's family had a Post Office named after them; thus the Nelsonville P.O. in AL. Do you have any information on George. There is a George E. W. Nelson on the 1870 census in Franklin Co., Nelsonville P. O. and I certainly hope this isthe one I seek. From the family I have that Eunice's grandfather was full Cherokee although this has never been verified and the tribe could be something different. I have a wonderful old picture of Ervin and he was definitely part Native American and I inherited this wonderful blood. Any help is appreciated.
