In January 1940, a WPA crew was grading the road at Mule Pen Ford on Beaver Dam Creek, south of Atmore, when one of the men discovered a skeleton at the end of his shovel. Further diggings brought out a complete human skeleton, remains of two dagger type knives, a string of pearl beads, a pair of scissors, and an old muzzle-loading type rifle. The condition of the articles found indicated that the grave was an old one. All the wood from the gun had rotted away. A date on the metal part of the gun was deciphered to be 1821. Only metal and glass parts of the other articles remained. There was evidence that the pearl beads had been strung with wire that had rotted away. Since the pearls were of such fine quality the workers were very careful in digging. There were around 300 very small pearls scattered about in the ground. While the skeleton was that of a very tall person, it was thought to have been a woman because of the presence of the beads and scissors in the grave. As far as anyone knows, there was NEVER a grave yard in that area.
