The 1866 Alabama State census was taken after the Civil War, and
was the first census to list Black heads of households. There was
three Schedules in this census, the first Sch. listed the White
Population, the Second Sch. listed the Black Population, and the
Three Sch. listed the White Population. All three of these
Schedules listed the heads of households by name and listed the
members of the house only using numbers in colums by sex and age
(much in the fashion of the early 1800's census records). Only
Schedule three was divided by Township and Range, there were a
few Township & Ranges listed in the other two Sch.'s
also. This census is important due to the fact that many of the
people were left off the 1860 Federal census of Lawrence Co.,
Ala. It also helps to identify those that died or were killed
during the War.
Note: People were not always listed on both schedules with their
full names, some times it was initals. Also this census is some
what hard to read on microfilm, so we did the best we could do.
We listed people that were on on both census Schedules, if they
were listed on one with full name that is whatt we listed for
both. If not an all that was given was an inital, that is what we
listed.
