BURRUSS Jan. 2003
Rev. John C. Burruss lived in Courtland, AL
from roughly 1833-1848. He lived at a Plantation called Locust
Grove. He was a Methodist-Episcopal Minister educated at the
Univ. of Virginia. Prior to Courtland, he lived in Woodville, MS
for a few years. After Courtland, he moved to Caddo Parish, LA
where he died in 1863. I have never been able to determine where
he was buried. the rest of his family is buried in Woodville, MS
at the Bowling Green cemetery, but he is conspicuously absent. I
was wondering if the Burruss surname or Locust Grove might be
familiar to anyone in the area. Thanks mjohnson@gene.COM

assistance on locating any information on Greenberry Gray and his
wife Mary Brown. They were married about 1832 and are in

SPANGLER November
2003
I am searching for information about George G.
Spangler. Is it possible that he and Granville G. Spangler
(Civil War veteran, b. 1845-46) are the same man? George G.
Spangler was born about 1847 in Alabama. He is counted in the
1880 census as an unmarried farmer living alone in his own
household near Leighton, Alabama.I believe that his parents are
Daniel Spangler (born 1812 in Virginia; died 1895 in Alabama) and
Nancy Mullins/Mullens (born 1813 in Alabama; died before
1880). In 1880, Daniel Spangler (married to a much younger wife,
Georgia) and his sons James H., John W., and Daniel L. are all
heads of their separate households in Township 5, Lawrence
County, Alabama. Can anyone confirm that George G. Spangler is a
son of Daniel and Nancy? If not, who are his parents? What is his
relation to the other Spanglers living near him? What is George
G. Spangler's full name? Does anyone know his story? What became
of him? Apparently John, James, and Granville (George's
older brothers?) fought in the Civil War, but he stayed at home.
He would have been about eighteen in 1865 as the war ended. Was he
one of the merchants of Spangler Brothers store? I've seen
references to a Spangler's store in Town Creek, Alabama in 1909;
also a Colbert County store in Leighton that was rebuilt on Main
Street in 1897.Any information you're willing to share would be
appreciated. With thanks, Harryette
