Tuscaloosa
County
Courthouse 7th Floor Records
The 7th Floor Records Project is a
special project of the NGTGS
Historic Records Preservation Committee
with a mission to preserve and record the court records located on the
7th floor of the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse.
The local volunteers of the Night Group TGS are making progress with the 7th floor records. A preliminary inventory has been taken for 77 books. Two members of the Alabama Archives staff will be working with us. We have a couple of staff members of the Hoole Library, University of Alabama also working with us, along with interested volunteers locally.
We have the interest of several local historical societies. The chairman of the Night Group's HRPC announced at our October Night Group meeting Thursday that the volunteers will be working shortly to move the records to a better and, more importantly, a secure place to work. They will be under lock and key.
Members of the Night Group Historical Records Preservation Committee will serve as supervisors in this effort to clean, etc., these records.
A former Special Collections Curator, that has been retired for many years is a member of our Night Group HRPC. This is a long-term project. It will not be done quickly. Wish us well. We probably won't get really involved with this until after the first of the year.
Keep in mind as you read this .... some of these committee members and volunteers are gainfully employed; have families, i.e., do have a life outside of genealogy and, while generous with their time, it will not be a "24-7" effort here. I do ask that you encourage all you know to volunteer to help ... at the moment, this will require actual physical presence in T-Town; hands-on, by volunteers. Volunteers will be required to go through a training period.
So, folks just cannot walk in and go to work at the present time without training.
