Kindred STRICKLAND submitted by Harold Wright
Kindred Strickland was one of the early settlers of Pickens County, AL. He was born June 6, 1788 in Wake County, NC, to his parents Able and Nancy Strickland and had four brothers, Kinsbird, Kinsman, Kinuel and Kinyard. He married Tempy Reeves (b-27 May 1790) on January 5, 1811 in Wake County, NC. They had ten children; Mary Pauline, Effington, Kinyard, Gray, Penny, Harkney, Teeny, Jarrett, Susan and Peyton.
Kindred and Tempy Strickland, along with his Brothers Kinsbird and Kinuel, moved from North Carolina during the great out-migration from the Carolinas to the deep South and Southwest and arrived in Greene County, AL. about 1826. They moved in 2-wheel mule drawn carts with two of their children,Harkney and Teeny (twins), being only two years old at the time. They lived in Greene County, AL. for a short period of time and then moved to Pickens County near Gordo, AL. about 1831. Property records indicate that Kindred purchased the first land in Pickens Co, AL,160 acres (T22, R14), on April 30, 1831. By 1836, Kindred had purchased an additional 920 acres near Gordo, AL. for a total ownership of 1,080 acres of land. Kindred Strickland is said to have given the first acre of land for the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church near Gordo, AL.The names of Kindred and Tempy appear on the list as charter members of the church, which dates to its founding in 1843.
Kindred Strickland died July 24, 1868 in Gordo, AL. and his wife Tempy died July 9, 1864 in Gordo, AL. Both are buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery.
