HARRIS, PITTMAN posted by Tonia Ollerton on Sunday, October 17, 1999

I have a bit of a puzzle regarding my great grandmother, Nancy Caroline PITTMAN. I have her obituary which lists her as having been born in Randolph County on 8 Feb 1856. The obit also states that she married Britton (or Brittain or other variations of the name) James HARRIS on 29 September 1873. I have information from a third cousin that her father was James Madison PITTMAN. The 1870 census lists two PITTMAN families in Rock Mills, Randolph County. The family headed by J. M. PITTMAN has a Nancy listed age 10. The other family headed by W. A. PITTMAN has a Nancy listed age 14. This second Nancy is the correct age to be my great grandmother.

Since she was 17 when she married, would she have needed to get her father to sign a permission form? Was 17 considered underage at that time? I've read that if under age 21, a woman had to get her father's permission to wed. Would the permission statement still be in existenance? How would I get a copy of it?
