Richards DAR House Museum

The Richards DAR House Museum is an
1860 Italianate Townhouse built by Captain and Mrs. Charles
Richards and has extensive decorative iron lace railings and
trim on the outside of the home. The house is located in a
nine-block area now called the DeTonti Square District and
was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in
1972.
The Richards moved to Mobile in 1846 and
in 1849 built a house across the street from the museum. In
1850 Captain Richards went into the mercantile business and
in 1851 purchased the two lots on the other side of the
street and in 1860 built what today is the Richards DAR
House Museum. The house has had only three owners --
The Richards family, Ideal Cement Company and the City of
Mobile.
The house is available for rental for
wedding receptions, parties, meetings or any other function.
The six chapters of the DAR in Mobile
provide guides and management for the Museum.
A genealogical research library is
located in the Richards DAR House Museum and is open during
regular Museum hours. Special assistance is available by
appointment. No books can be removed from the Library;
however, a copy machine is available for patron's
use.
