The Ties That Bind

The Ties That Bind

Pvt. Gibeon Jefferson Sullivan #2662

Private William M. Goldman's resting place had lain unmarked for 118 years, but Sunday afternoon, May 31, for miles around the Goldman Family Cemetery on Peavey's Landing Road, people learned he now has a headstone when the 21st Alabama Infantry Color Guard gave the volley salute to Goldman along with Tuberville's battery (cannon) and Ellison's mortar. Most of these men who re-enact the different branches of Service of the Confederate States Army, came from Mobile and Clarke Counties; however, some came from as far away as Laurel and Greenwood, Mississippi. Pvt. Goldman was a member of Company C, the 37th Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States Army.

The Memorial Address was given by Terry Bailey, Southwest Alabama Brigade Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, who spoke about the camaraderie of "mess mates" and the private soldier during the War Between the States. Thomas E. Fuller, commander of the Washington County Capt. Leroy Bowling SCV Camp, said his words would be short and would consist of three points: praising the UDC ladies, "cussing" the Yankees, and issuing a pledge. Fuller told how it was UDC that has raised the monuments to Confederate soldiers on the public square across the South. He said that the Confederate soldier left his home and family to fight for the Constitution as originally intended. He issued a pledge to the UDC Chapter for $500 personal funds and $500 from the Capt. Leroy Bowling SCV Camp toward a monument to honor the men from Washington County who fought for the CSA.

Inspiring prayers and words in remembrance of Confederate ancestors were given by Reverend Marty Schills of the Midway Methodist Church and Reverend Nadine B. Walters of New Hope Methodist Church. The grave flag was presented by Capt. Steve Kennedy of the 21st Alabama to Goldman descendant, L. V. Goldman, who was responsible for getting the headstone for his great grandfather from the Veterans Administration.

The memorial/headstone dedication was sponsored by the Pvt. Gibeon Jefferson Sullivan Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Two members of the chapter, Mrs. Mary Lou (Batley) Jones and Mrs. Elizabeth (Batley) Walker laid the memorial wreath to the strains of "Amazing Grace" played on bag pipes.

The commander of the local SCV Camp challenged us by pledging $500 personal money and $500 from the SCV Camp toward a Confederate Monument. Our county does not have one.
