ALABAMA DIVISION COLORING CONTEST

The Fourth Grade Alabama History Coloring Contest shall be open to fourth grade students only. Judging will be based on coloring, overall neatness, and correct answers, and FOLLOWING ALL DIRECTIONS. Contest pictures must not be enlarged or changed in any way. Reproduce on one sheet using back and front, with the picture on one side and the history quiz on the other. Keep a copy for next year as the same contest will be used next year!!

Each chapter shall mail only the winning entries to the Division Historian no later than May 15.


PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!

1. A master copy of the contest will be provided to each Alabama Division Chapter at Winter Board.

2. The coloring contest should be handled by an enthusiastic historian/committee in each chapter. Chapters are encouraged to offer prizes, refreshments, etc. to encourage participation. Prize items dealing with the Confederacy or Confederate History are greatly encouraged.

3. Regardless of the number of schools involved, each participating chapter may submit only ONE First Place, ONE Second Place, ONE Third Place, and ONE Honorable Mention winner. Please mail ONLY those FOUR entries--NOT ALL

4. Please check the entries carefully for accuracy, neatness, and the following of instructions. (Try to have several people check the entries and do the judging in order to eliminate missing some errors.)

5. Fill out the Contest Winning Entries Form and attach the winning First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention entries and mail to the Division Historian.

6. All entries become the property of the Alabama Division United Daughters of the Confederacy and will not be returned.



Statistical Requirements for Historian General Awards

All chapter historians please complete the Statistical Requirements for Historian General Awards and forward to Donna Clark so that your chapter can be counted. This form can be found on the General Web Page Under Information for Members at the bottom of the page under Other Forms. Just click on the form and fill it out and send it in.



HISTORIAN GENERAL'S WORKSHOP

The application and instructions for the Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal are available only on the website. Refer to Handbook pages 8-9 and 8-10 and UDC Ritual page 24.
o Applications must be approved by the Division Historian. Division Historians have power to deny.
o Given for excellence in furthering the study and preservation of Confederate History. To date have approved 5, denied 4.
o Award is to be a surprise to recipient and notification will result in denial.
o Be specific regarding the qualifications. Print write-up on back, not attachment. Enclose proof. It would be helpful to provide wording of certificate (in one sentence).
o Allow 6 to 8 weeks for processing.
o Please provide phone number or email address of chapter officer contact.
o Print on legal size (8 1/2 x 14) Official UDC acid-free paper, do not reduce. Do not fold! Send two copies of application and one copy of proof, and check for $30.00.
o The non-engraved insignia form to no longer needed.
o Notification- the Chapter and Division Historian will be notified by mail on the same day that the approved application is sent to headquarters for processing. If an application is denied, the package will be sent back with an explanation of why it was denied and a copy of the letter will be sent to the Division Historian.
o Replacements for lost medals are handled on a case by case basis.

Scrapbooks, Pressbooks, Yearbooks

Refer to UDC Handbook 13-1 - 13-4 for rules. Scrapbooks 12 x 12 will also be allowed due to the difficulty of getting the old size. Transparent sleeves will be allowed but not laminated pages.

Newsletters

Refer to UDC handbook 13-4. Number of members and number of copies printed should be indicated in the top right-hand corner of page 1 or printed in the masthead.

Essay contest

Refer to UDC Handbook 13-5 for rules. The topic list was sent to Division and CWND Presidents in January for distribution. Division Historians will select the two best for each topic and send to Historian General by September 1. Only UDC members may enter contest.

Programs

The programs list has been sent to the Division and CWND Presidents for distribution. The list will also appear in the March Magazine. The programs will be printed in the magazine for the month before they a scheduled. Some of the programs are thought-provoking, some offer the opportunity to research the topic as it relates to your area and incorporate that into the program. Some of the programs are just for fun. Good, interesting programs increase attendance. Chapters are awarded 10 points on the rating sheet for every meeting that included the Historian General's program. Whether the Historian General's program or another program with a guest speaker, please make an effort to make them interesting!

Reporting

Reports are due to this office by September 1. The form Statistical Requirements for Historian General's Awards is available on the website. Division and CWND Historians will use it to compile the reports sent to the Historian General. The statistics will be used to determine the winners of General Historical Awards. Many of the numbers also require accompanying information. Be sure to send a copy to the corresponding committee also where noted.
