BATTLES, BURKS, CLEILAND posted by Deborah Clarke Hollingsworth on Wednesday, June 2, 1999

Surnames: BURKS CLEILAND BATTLES
Submitter: Deborah Clarke Hollingsworth (dhollin2@bellsouth.net)
Date: 31 May 1999

I'm looking for the "BURKS" family who lived on Government Street in Mobile, Alabama before and during the Civil War. I believe one of these BURKS married a CLEILAND and moved to the Coffeeville/Saliptca area of Clarke County, Alabama. When I was little, spending a lot of time at my grandmother, she used to show me this fork with a very faded 'B' on the handle of it. And then she would tell me the story of how the BURKS, during the Civil War, had to hide their silver in the lard and lower it down the well. The Yankees found some, but not all. My grandmother, Eloise Pitman Clarke, and her 3 sisters, Maggie, Mary Lou and Jeanette, each got one of the pieces from their mother - Sallie Belle Cleiland Pitman - along with this same story. My great aunt Jeanette also has the story of coming to Mobile in the early part of this century to visit an aunt they called ''Auntie''. Auntie lived on Royal Street and Aunt Jeanette says she remembered walking back to the Mobile River. (Aunt Jeanette was a very young girl at the time and it was before they moved to Mobile, so they traveled from Saliptca, Al.) And the BURKS were also supposed to be good friends with the BATTLES who owned the Battlehouse on Royal Street in Mobile. Does anybody have any info at all of the BURKS from Mobile, or even the CLEILANDS of Clarke County. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks - Deborah Clarke Hollingsworth dhollins@bellsouth.net

I'm still looking for any information about my great grandmother's family. Her name was Mary Undine BROWN, born in 1842, supposedly in Alabama. I have no idea what county. She ended up in Neshoba Co., Mississippi, married to a Joseph Abner JOHNSON. They probably married in about 1857-58, for they had a son - my grandfather, John Randel JOHNSON, in 1859, in Neshoba Co., MS. They are listed on the 1860 census there. I've looked and looked for her on the 1850 census as an 8 year old or possibly she could have still been 7 years old, depending on when the census was taken. If anybody has seen this name - Mary Undine Brown anywhere - please let me know. Thank you.

They had a son, Edward T. NOLEN, who was born about 1824 in Alabama, a daughter, Elizabeth, who was born about 1827 in Alabama, and a daughter, Amanda, who was born about 1829 in Alabama. Their other children were born in Texas. In all the various records here in Texas, I have seen the name spelled NOWLAND, NOWLIN, NOLIN, NOLAND, NOLAN and NOLEN. The current descendents usually spell the name NOLIN, NOLAN or NOLEN.
