Uncle Dan Lemons

McDougal History

Many of the McDougal area recall the past and archives reveal interesting people of that area. This picture and news clipping was taken from The Courier, and we re-print exactly as it first appeared:

"Uncle Dan Lemons - sitting by L. D. Oaks.

Uncle Dan, as he was known to this area of Clay County, was evidently from the locust and wild honey school of John the Baptist ... and he cares no more for the appearance of his clothes than he did for his food. Facing the L. D. Oaks camera head-on, one can detect the dignity of a life that scorned such unimportant items as buttons on his vest or a new coat to enhance his personal appearance to the eye of the camera. He posed just as he was and Mr. Oaks has captured all the dignity of a man of the cloth despite the attire.

Uncle Dan followed the custom of Pioneer years and did not depend on his churches for anything more than token contributions to his support. He ran sawmills, farmed, operated a store, and did anything else that happened to be available for a job during the week. At nights and on Sundays he preached the gospel with all the fervor of the pioneering evangelists...

We haven't Uncle Dans in this generation and are all the poorer for the lack of them.
