Census Images Online Project

The ARMISSIS-L mailing list is working on a project where we, the subscribers, can make a voluntary contribution to a fund to be used to purchase CD with actual scanned Mississippi County, AR census images. The CDs will be ordered from S-K Publications and from Census View (later years may possibly ordered from ALLCENSUS) who will donate (in name of the ARMISSIS-L) a copy of the CD to the USGenWeb Archives for permanent, free public access on the Web. The images on the CD will be uploaded by the USGenWeb Archives and kept at the USGenWeb Archives. There will be a direct link to the census from the Mississippi County site.
One member asked if there would be an index
to the census. Since they are actual images of the handwritten census,
they do not have an index. There is, however, a goal to have each
page indexed. Volunteers are needed to do this. I plan on working
on it, but I can't do it all by myself. Just a list of the
surnames found on each page would be a huge help. After the images
are uploaded, take a look at the image, type the surnames that are on the
page (in order of appearance, not alphabetical), save it as a .txt file
(make sure you include the census year and the image page number so I know
what image it's for!) and email it to me at lostmycensus@earthlink.net
and I will upload it to correspond with the actual image. It
really wouldn't take long, I bet it would only take just 5 minutes to list
the surnames on one page.
