“AS I REMEMBER IT”

HARRY WOODARD

By Donna Cooper

(All statements made by the subject of the article are written as stated and no attempt has been made by the author or N.A.G.S. to correct any wording or statements made during the interview.)

A long time resident of Rogers, Arkansas, is 84 year-old Harry Woodard.  He was born in Kansas, lived on a homestead in Oklahoma, and was an early settler of Benton County, Arkansas.

Harry Woodard lives at 622 South 4th Street, Rogers, Arkansas.  He said the Woodard’s had left Rogers several times, but always came back.  It has always been home to him.  I found that Harry enjoys talking about the years gone by.  He has a good memory and remembers dates.  He told me that he has a son living at Tulsa, Oklahoma, named George Woodard, and he is an only child.  He said there are now living in Rogers, five Woodard families.  I told him I had always been interested in the Woodard families in Rogers, because my mother-in-law was a Woodard before she married.  Her family settled in McDonald County, MO, which is about 25 miles from Rogers.  We then discussed the Woodard’s in McDonald Co., and talked about their early arrival in that county.

Harry told me the data given below:

“I removed to Rogers, with my parents, B.T. Woodard and Mary Ann Walton Woodard, they had 6 children.  They were 5 boys and 1 girl; Lon, Harley, Ford, Me, Lula-we called her “Sis”, and Fred.  I was born in Kansas at Hester, that’s near Lawrence on March 30, 1886.  My first Sunday School teacher was Carrie Nation.  My dad had come from South Indianapolis, Ind., and I believe that his parents were of English origin.  My dad had an old English made watch, that had been in the family a long time.  Dad had two brothers that stayed in Kansas, one named Luke and I can’t remember the other one’s name.

“Dad worked with the Government and with the Indians. We first lived in Kansas, then in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and later at Ava, Oklahoma.  I think some facts have been worked up on my brother, Ford, who was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, as being the first white boy born in Indian Territory.  He was born in 1872.

“While we were still living in Oklahoma, we made a trip back to Kansas, to Lawrence.  I must have been 6 or something like that.  There was three families of us that made that trip.  We fixed up a Prairie Schooner, which was a light-weight wagon with three spring seats.  If you have never ridden in a Prairie Schooner, you have missed the time of your life.

“I married in Benton County, to Miss Mabel Juhre, on August 21, 1918.  She was the daughter of Charles Juhre and Margaret Ann McManus.  The Juhre family come to Rogers in the late 1800’s.  Charles Juhre, her father, was born in the Providence of Vandenburg, Germany, in 1858.  He first come to Milwaukee, in 1866 from Germany and the he moved to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1880.  They owned the Corner Drug Store and that block west, for many years.  My wife is not living. She could have told you more about her family, but I do have some dates that she wrote down.”

Harry Woodard was killed on March 3, 1972, after this article was written.  He made a habit of visiting the Corner Drug Store every morning about 10:00.  He walked out in front of a car on his way to the Drug Store.
