- DAVIS, HARRIS, KING, ROGERS,
WITHERINGTON posted
by William R. King, Jr. on
Wednesday, March 4, 1998
- Ouachita County @ 1900 Census - Washington Township.
James M. KING (born abt. 1848-Ark)and wife Elizabeth
(born abt. 1857-Ark). Elizabeth was known as
"Bettie", but actual name is thought to have
been Margaret Elizabeth ROGERS. They were married in
Calhoun County 18 Dec. 1873. Parents of James M. KING
were John T. KING & Martha Carrie WITHERINGTON, who
resided in Fayette Township, near old community of
Artesian, in Calhoun County from about 1847. Most of the
children of James & Elizabeth moved from Ouachita
County to Grant Parish, Louisiana following the death of
father,James, in early 1900's. Would like to share
information with families having ancestors living in
Washington Township-Ouachita County around 1900 who might
assist in determining date of James M. KING's death and
burial place. I am member of Ouachita- Calhoun
Genealogical Society and will greatly appreciate any new
information.
- DAVIS, HARRIS, KING, PARKER,
ROGERS, WITHERINGTON posted by William R. King, Jr. on Thursday,
March 5, 1998
- James M. KING (b. abt 1848-49 in Ark) & Margaret
Elizabeth ROGERS (b. abt 1857 in Ark), and children
appeared in 1900 Census, Washington Township, Ouachita
County. Daughter, Lillian (b.1881 in Ark), married J. H.
WILLIAMS in Ouachita County in Oct. 1898. Her marriage
certificate shows Lillian to be from Elliott (?). James
& Elizabeth were married in Calhoun County in 1873
and appeared in Fayette Township, near Artesian, in the
1870 & 1880 census records. Have been unable to
locate any records indicating dates of death or burial
places for James & Elizabeth. 1900 census-Ouachita CO
is last time they have been located. Most of the children
of James & Elizabeth moved to Grant Parish Louisiana
in early 1900's, leading us to believe that James &
Elizabeth probably died sometime early in 1900's.
Children of James & Elizabeth were: Thomas L.(b. abt
1874), married Martha A. MERRITT in 1899 in Calhoun
County. William Clayborn (b. Jul 1875), married Mollie
HALL about 1908 in Grant Parish, La. Arthur Edward (b.
Mar 1879) married Mrs. Sallie HARRIS PARKER in Feb. 1898
in Calhoun County. Sallie died following birth of my
father, William Riley KING on 13 Dec. 1898 in Calhoun Co.
Lillian V., (b. abt 1881) She first married J. H.
WILLIAMS in Ouachita Co in Oct. 1898. She second married
Silus W. (Bud) COBB. Lillian & Silus COBB lived in
Selma, Grant Parish, La. Garland KING. No info on this
son, born about 1883. Jessie Melton, (b. Jun 1885,
possibly in Union CO). Jessie married Nettie May SMITH in
Aug 1909 in Selma, Grant Parish, La. Albert Cleveland,
(b. Oct 1888 in Ark), married Bessie WILLIAMS in 1910 in
Grant Parish, La. Second married Bessie RAYBURN, probably
in Grant Parish, La., date unknown, but before 1930.
Bessie KING, (b. Sep 1892 in Ark), married Louis N.
ARMSTRONG (minister), probably in Grant Parish. No
children. George Leonard, (b. Jan 1895 in Ark). Never
married, died in 1920 in Selma, Grant Parish, La. Parents
of James M. KING were John T. KING (b. abt 1816 in SC)
and Martha Carrie WITHERINGTON (b. abt 1830 in Ala.) John
T. & Martha Carrie moved to Arkansas about 1847 and
lived in Calhoun Co for the remainder of their lives.
Would greatly appreciate any new information on these
early families of Calhoun & Ouachita Counties. I am a
member of the Ouachita-Calhoun Genealogical Society.
Thanks for any assistance. Bill King

from Franklin Co. Al to Ouacita Co., Ar in the late
1850's. He is listed in the 1860 and 1870 census's. In
1860 he is listed with his wife Almarinda, son's Charles
R., James N. and John B.. Also listed as living with him
are two girls - Nancy JONES and Lear JONES. Would

- JONES posted by J. Norvill Jones on Saturday,
March 7, 1998
- Seek information about my grandfather, Nathan Henry
JONES, who enlisted at Camden, Arkansas in May 1861 in
Company C (the Camden Knights) of the First (Fagan's)
Arkansas Infantry Regiment. Co.C was lead initially by
Captain William L. Crenshaw. Any information about the
local recruitment of members of this company and its'
history will be appreciated. My grandfather later lived
in Kingsland, Dorsey (now Cleveland) County but he may
have been a resident of Ouachita at the time he enlisted.
If he was not, it is likely that he lived in Dallas
County where my mother's family were early settlers. I
never knew my grandfather JONES and would like to learn
more about this side of my family.
- KING, ROGERS, WILLIAMS, WITHERINGTON posted by William R. King, Jr. on Monday,
March 9, 1998
- Searching for information of my gr grandparents: James M.
KING (b. abt 1849-50 in Ark) and MARGARET Elizabeth
(Bettie) ROGERS (b. abt 1857 in Ark). James was the son
of John T. KING (SC) & Martha Carrie WITHERINGTON
(AL), who moved to Calhoun County about 1847. James &
Elizabeth are found for the final time in Washington
Township, Ouachita County Census Of 1900. Have been
unable to locate date of death, or place of burial for
James or Betty. Children of James & Betty were:
Thomas (b. 1874), William Clayborn (b. 1875), Arthur
Edward (b. abt 1878- 79), Lillian (b.1881), Garland (b.
1883), Jesse Melton (b. 1885), Albert Cleveland (b.
1888), Bessie (b. 1892), George Leonard (b. 1895), and
Robert (b. 1897)...Most of children moved to Grant
Parish, LA in early 1900's. James was deceased prior to
1914 probate in Calhoun Co of the will of Catherine
Caroline KING, but all of the children were mentioned in
her will. Family info indicates that Elizabeth (Bettie)
died while in route to Louisiana to join her older sons,
William Clayborn & Arthur Edward in Selma, Grant
Parish, LA. She might have been buried in Jonesboro, but
have not been able to locate death or burial info there
in Jonesboro. Daughter Lillian, married J.H. WILLIAMS in
Ouachita County on 2 Oct. 1898. The marriage certificate
indicated that Lillian was from the community of Elliott
(?), south of Camden. Any information from researchers
working Southern Ouachita County about 1890-1900 will be
greatly appreciated. I am member of Ouachita-Calhoun
Genealogical Society. Thanks !!
