BLAKE, WASHINGTON, WOODFIN posted by Deborah Kemp on Saturday, November 10, 2001

Please contact me if you know anything about this family of WASHINGTON or WOODFIN: 1870 time period – George WASHINGTON, Sr., was born ca. 1836 in TN. George (Sr.) was married to a woman named Emily, who was born ca. 1841 in TN. George (Sr.) and Emily WASHINGTON had one child they named George, Jr., who was born in 1860 in AR. 1880 time period – George WASHINGTON, Jr. – By 1880, George (Jr.) had married a woman named Milly and they had a daughter they named Emily, who was born in late 1879 or early 1880. Milly’s maiden name was WOODFIN. When George (Jr.) and Milly had Emily, apparently Milly brought stepchildren to the marriage meaning Milly may have been several years older than her husband, George WASHINGTON, Jr. The stepchildren’s names were Warner, Annie L., Manuel and maybe Maggie. 1900 time period – Around 1896, George (Sr.) married a young woman named Adelle (or, Adella) – it looks like George was 60 and Adelle was 20 when they got married. In 1900, George (Sr.) and Adelle told the Census taker that they had one child, but there’s no child listed in the household with them. Maggie – I have a picture of a woman named Maggie BLAKE taken around 1900 in Cotton Plant, and a death certificate for Maggie BLAKE, dated April 1942. Maggie BLAKE, was my grandfather’s aunt or maybe his great-aunt. Maggie BLAKE was married to a man named Will BLAKE. 1910 time period – In 1910, my grandfather (Rufus) was living with Horace G. and Cora (Foster) WOODFIN. The census record states that Horace is Rufus’s uncle. At that time, Horace and Cora WOODFIN had three children, named Henry, Ethel and Airville. They later had another child they named Horace, Jr. 1915 and beyond – My grandfather Rufus moved to West Helena and worked for a company called Penrod, Jacob and McCowan before he enlisted for World War I. After the war, I think he returned to northeastern AR in June 1919 before he moved to Coffeyville, KS. Do any of the names and events (above) sound familiar to you? Researching WASHINGTON and WOODFIN surnames in Phillips County (also counties of Woodruff, Monroe, Mississippi and St. Francis. Thanks so much for reading ...
