- SPENCER,
posted by Carl
Montgomery on Monday, January 9, 2006
- I am a family genealogy researcher for my family. My aunt and her
family moved to Alabama to Arkansas in between 1910 and 1920,
Henrietta (Montgomery) and Ezekiel SPENCER. My uncle Ezekiel SPENCER
was buried, April 6, 1924, Masonic Staff Cemetery, Pillips County,
Tappan Township, Lambrook (Inc. Town) according to his death
certificate. I have not been able to locate this cemetery in my
research. Does this cemetery exist? Is the cemetery affiliated with
the Masonic Grand Lodge, Prince Hall Affiliated of Arkansas?
I have not successfully located the date nor the place of my aunt's
death or burial. My uncle's death certificate reports that he was
widowed at the time of his death, which means my aunt died after
reporting of the Census, June 1920, (she is listed on the 1920 US
Federal Census) but before April 6, 1924. Originally they lived in
Ashley County, Banner Township but moved to Phillips County by 1930.
Please advise me regarding this Cemetery. It was not on the list of
African American Cemeteries in Phillips County.
Thanks!

- BROWN, KING
posted by Mary A.
Powell Sutphin on Tuesday, February 28, 2006
- I am seeking information on the Dr. Richard G. KING family. Specifically what happened
to Dr. KING. Dr. R. G. KING, b. NC. ca. 1820, married in Macon, ILL. to Miriam Lewis BROWN
on 11/30/1859. Miriam, "Mira" d/o Frederick A. BROWN and Miriam Elvira Powell BROWN. It
would appear Dr. KING died after 1872, possibly Camden, ARK. Two sons are listed in census
records, Richard KING, b. MS. 1862 and Anson L. KING, b. 1868. If cemetery records or
obituaries for this period are available, I would be most appreciative of any help. Thank
you in advance.

- I'm trying to find out where my great grandfather is buried and what our family
connection is to Phillips Co.
The Shelby Co.Burial Certificate dated Oct 21, 1909 shows his body was sent to Marvell
Arkansas. The burial cert says "Bill" WARD. Research has found no obit in the Memphis
newspapers.
He was born in 1878 in DeSoto Co. MS, married and resided in Shelby Co. TN. He was a
dairy farmer.
His full name was John William Lemley WARD. He's in the 1880 DeSoto Co. MS census as
John W. L. WARD age 2, signed his name as J.W.WARD on his 1897 Shelby Co. TN marriage license.
His parents were Laurel L. WARD [son of a John WARD] and Anna Eliza SCHRIMSHER [dau.of
Wiley Schrimsher] who wed in 1876 in Tate Co. MS.
Can anyone help? Thanks.
- TULLAR, TULLER
posted by Kathy
Ormord on Sunday, April 30, 2006
- I am researching my great-great grandfather's role in the Civil War. I have the
following information:
Pvt. Henry C. TULLER/TULLAR
29th Iowa Infantry
Company E from Fremont Co. in Iowa
Died May 5, 1863 in Helena, Arkansas of disease
I have checked the cemetery sites in Phillips Co. and couldn't find his name. Some of
the emails that have been replied to suggest that he would probably buried in Helena since
he died of disease. Could you give me some suggestions as how to proceed with my research?
Thank you.

- MCPEAK
posted by Stephensonricl@aol.com
on Friday, May 12, 2006
- My grandmother, Pearl Ruth MCPEAK, and her sister Alice Gertrude MCPEAK, spent several
years in a Roman Catholic convent in Helena. Their father, Shelby Whit MCPEAK, died in 1903
in Tunica, MS. Two of his children were adopted, and the other two were sent to this
convent where they remained until they were of age. I have scoured the census records for
1910, and I cannot find either of the girls, or the convent/orphanage. Does anyone have any
ideas as to the name or location of the convent, or to how I can find this information. I
would really appreciate the help.

- Elaine Race Riot of 1919
posted by Gary Moore
on Thursday, May 25, 2006
- I am seeking to sort out the differing versions of the death toll in the Elaine race
riot of 1919, and have a quick question about census data. I have looked at the microfilm
of the federal manuscript census of 1910 for Phillips County, but I'm puzzled as to which
enumeration township includes the town of Elaine and the community of Hoop Spur. Would you
happen to know?
And also, any other comments or insights you might have to offer on the 1919 affair
would be most welcome.

for my family relatives. I need some advice. My grandfather died in 1955. In his obituary it
states he had two sisters. One who lived in Helena, Phillips County. Her married name at the
time was Dona JOHNSON. Her maiden name was Dona B. HELMS. She was born July 1893. Evening

Any help to find information on this family would be greatly appreciated and then some.
I know for a fact she was still there in 1969. Another brother died then. Thank you so much

Widow TACKETT.
The 1837 Phillips Co., Tax List:

- BROOKS, SHAWK
posted by Margaret Samu
on Wednesday, June 14, 2006
- I am trying to find information about Caroline Shawk BROOKS (b. 1840),
who was a sculptor from Helena, Arkansas. According to my research,
she patented a process (or a tool) for modeling plaster, and used it to
make a sculpture in butter at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in
Philadelphia. There was quite a bit written about her butter sculpture
in the press at the time. SHAWK is her maiden name, BROOKS her married
name.
Would there be any reference book such as a Who's Who, or books on
Arkansas Women or artists from the 1880s-90s? I am not finding
anything here in New York, and am wondering if you have other resources
about people from the region, for some facts about her life and career.
I am very interested in knowing what she might have patented, but at
this point, any historical information would be very helpful. If the
research I am conducting ends up being of interest to anyone in Helena,
I would be happy to share whatever else I turn up.
Many thanks in advance for your help and advice.
Update Submitted by Margaret Samu on Wednesday, July 5, 2006:
Since I last wrote, a lot of information has turned up on BROOKS from some local sources,
including a 1967 issue of the Phillips County Historical Quarterly, which I am still waiting
to receive from Interlibrary Loan. Brooks's patent, once I found out the patent number, is
available online. I have also been able to get some old articles from 19th-c newspaper
archives that are now online. It is pretty amazing the kind of resources that are out
there!

- Have the cemeteries been copied for Phillips? I am interested in burials of ELLENBURG.
Phillip ELLENBURG of Alabama settled there and I have been able to find when his wife,
Bertha L (VINES) died, which was July, 1980 at Marvel, Phillips, Ark...this date from social
security records. This was a very large family. I have them through the 1930 census. In
1930 Phillip was a blacksmith and lived at Hicksville. They first settled in St. Francis
County, but was in Phillips in 1920 and 1930. (Listed as Ellenburd re 1930 census)
Where can I obtain a copy of Bertha's obit? I need this information to add to family
info buried at Gilliam Springs Baptist Cemetery, Arab, Marshall County, Al. I am a member
of the Arab Historical Society and this is a project I hope they will publish.
Any help will be appreciated.
