Stepped Tombs

Stepped tombs in Austin Cemetery

The stepped tomb is so called for its layered stone design resembling steps. The design of this type of tomb probably originates with the shape of the burial mound itself. Stepped tombs, like box tombs, were built over the mounded earth displaced by coffin. Note that this style of tomb does not indicate an actual above-ground burial in an upland area such as ours. So far I have located two examples of stepped tombs in Benton County, in Austin Cemetery, pictured above.
