Butler Hospital for the Insane

Butler Hospital for the Insane was the first hospital in Rhode Island exclusively for mentally ill patients. The creation of this hospital resulted from a visit and report by Dorothea Dix, and the philanthropy of industrialist Cyrus Butler. A grant from Nicholas Brown funded the opening.
