Northern Michigan Asylum (Traverse City State Hospital)

Cottage 27, "Hospitality House"

Cottage 27, a former residential cottage of the Northern Michigan Asylum (Traverse City State Hospital) is located on the northern part of the former asylum campus. It is one of two buildings owned by Munson Hospital. The other is Building 29, located just to the northeast. Cottages 27 and 29 are now separated from the rest of the historic asylum buildings by the recently-constructed Medical Campus Drive.

This cottage, which has been unused for a long time, is currently being restored for use as Munson Hospital's "Hospitality House", which will be used for lodging of families of hospital patients. It is to be completed in the fall of 2000.

Cottage 27 is similar in floor plan to Cottage 36 ("Sunnyhill"), but it is a more attractive building due to the south-side porch and windows which have not been bricked in. Cottage 27 does not have the east-facing round tower that most of the other cottages have.

The photo, which shows the south side under renovation, is by Fred Lortet.
