Northern Michigan Asylum (Traverse City State Hospital)

Cottage 32

Cottage 32 (Building 32) was one of the first of the large Victorian houselike "cottages" built at Northern Michigan Asylum (later Traverse City State Hospital). Designed by area architect E.R.Prall, it is over 100 years old, being built in 1892. Like the other cottages and Building 50, it was built of whitish-yellowish brick from the Markham brickworks. This cottage, like the others in the south cottage area, was built to house male psychiatric patients. The cottages were built to house between 60 and 125 patients each. At the beginning of the 20th century, this building was known as Cottage B.

This cottage is unique among the eleven cottages in its floor plan and look. Unlike most of the cottages, it does not have towers. Like the other cottages, it has two stories plus a large attic level and a half-buried ground floor below. It is one of the two smallest cottages (along with Cottage 25 in the north cottage area).

This cottage is currently unused. The windows are either bricked in or replaced with barracade windows, and thus looks a lot different from the historic photo seen here. It is located on Brown Drive between cottages 30 and 34.
