Cottage 40 (Building 40, Cottage 24/26) is the northernmost of the southern
group of cottages at the former Traverse City State Hospital, and
it is located southwest of, and in line with, wing
20 of
Building 50. Cottage 40 is also adjoined to the
south with Building 22, which in turn
connects to Cottage 28. The three
buildings taken together are like one long
building.
This building is
now designated as #40, but used to be known as 24 and 26. The top floor
was 24, and the first floor was 26.
The book Through the Years
by Ohmer J. Curtiss lists the year 1898 for Cottage 24.
The cottage buildings were designed by a local architect named E.R.
Prall
Cottage 40 shares with most of the other cottages a sort of "I"-plan, with a squarish wing on either end connected by a narrower section. The front (southeast) side of the building also features a multi-story enclosed balcony, a feature only found elsewhere on Building 50. Cottage 40 is one of the cottages that does not have towers.
The cottages in the south cottage area were built to house male psychiatric patients. The cottages were built to house between 60 and 125 patients each. Cottage 40 is currently unused.
