Northern Michigan Asylum (Traverse City State Hospital)
Root Cellar (Building 62)

Building 62 (Root Cellar) is a small stable-like building located on the north side of Yellow Drive, west of most of the Traverse City State Hospital buildings. The building appears to be one of the oldest service buildings, probably built near the end of the 19th Century. This one-story building is constructed of a stone wall from the ground to about halfway up, and the rest of yellow-white Markham brick. It is buried into a hill to the north that comes up near the roof. This building was constructed in 1886, and there used to be another root cellar building (this one made of wood) to the west (long since burned down).

This attractive and historic little building is not one of the buildings designated for preservation. The very similar Building 63 lies to the east of Building 62.
