Northern Michigan Asylum (Traverse City State Hospital)

Old Shop Building

The Old Shop Building was located immediately to the back of the center of Building 50's chapel wing. It was probably demolished in the 1940s, prior to the construction of the new power plant.

This building was built in 1885, and was apparently designed by Building 50's architect, Gordon W. Lloyd.

It would appear that no good close-up photographs of the front (fan tower) section of this building exist. This tower bears some resemblance to the "Old Center" section of Building 50, also long ago demolished. The photo above and to the left is a magnification of a small section of an aerial photograph of the State Hospital buildings from the 1930s.

The functions of this building, one of the original few buildings at the State Hospital, were later dispersed between the new power plant (Building 52) and the group of service buildings located to the back (west) of Building 50.
