Charles Albert Stokes. Distinguished Conduct Medal. "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Sergeant Stokes led a section of bombers, against some machine gun positions, which were holding up the advance of the flank of his company. All the section except himself became casualties; but two of the guns were put out of action, and their detachment killed, and then Sergeant Stokes attacked the remaining gun single handed, and captured it killing or wounding all the crew. During all this time he was under machine gun fire of great severity. On returning to his platoon, he found his commander had become a casualty and he at once took command, and led the men forward. His very gallant behaviour and coolness under fire of the heaviest description were an example worthy of the highest praise."

"A very sad accident occurred at Winchester on Thursday afternoon last. The 2½ year old son of Mr and Mrs J Straiton was killed under peculiar circumstances. He was playing outside his home at about 4 p m and an hour later he was found lying near the stables. He was soon taken to Three Springs, but the doctor found the little chap was beyond human aid. It is not definitely known how the boy lost his life; it is thought that he fell from the stables whilst climbing or that he was kicked by a horse. Deep sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents."

"Late Mr. James S. Straiton. The news was received in Carnamah on Thursday evening of last week that Mr. J. S. Straiton, a well-known resident of the Winchester district had passed over the Great Divide that day. Although the Deceased gentleman had been failing in health for some time past, this was not generally known, and the news of his death came as a severe shock to all who had known him. The late Mr. Straiton had been engaged in farming pursuits at Winchester for a number of years. Originally he farmed two separate properties close to the [Winchester railway] siding, but about three years ago he disposed of the larger of these properties and decided to concentrate on his smaller holding which is near the Winchester School. The late Mr. Straiton established a small Dorset Horn stud on this Property, and last year he received a particularly good price for all of his export lambs. He did not take a very active part in the social life of the district, preferring to concentrate on the improvement of his farm. A widow and two young sons (Ian and Bruce) are left to mourn their loss, while one sister (Mrs. R. Power) resided in Carnamah. The funeral took place in Perth."

"Obituary - Mrs Lilly Michie Power. Residents of Carnamah and districts received a severe shock and a gloom was cast over the whole district, when it was learned that Mrs. Lilly Michie Power of Carnamah, had passed away in her sleep during the early hours of Monday morning, December 1. Deceased was born at Blairgowrie, in Perthshire, Scotland. She came to Western Australia with her husband and family in 1935, and they have lived in the Winchester and Carnamah districts during this time. Though of a retiring, quiet nature, the late Mrs. Power had a very large number of friends and everyone who knew her loved her and a vast number, outside her own dear ones, grieve deeply at their loss. Deceased leaves a sorrowing husband, son Alec, daughters Rachel and Bridie and daughter-in-law and grandson. The late Mrs. Power is also survived by her father who is 81 years of age, and a younger sister. Her two brothers predeceased her, one being killed in the Great War and the other, Mr. James Straiton, died at Winchester in 1942. At the time of her death deceased was 51 years of age. The funeral took place in the Winchester cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, December 2, after a brief service in the Presbyterian Church at Carnamah. The Rev. Foss officiated at the service and the graveside."

"Obituary - Late Mrs. Robertson - Large Concourse at Funeral. At the Carnamah Hospital on Saturday last the death occurred of one of the most prominent lady residents of the district in the person of Mrs. Jane Syme Robertson, the news coming as a great shock to her many friends in Carnamah and the surrounding centres. The deceased lady, who was 58 years of age, was the wife of the chairman of the Carnamah Road Board (Mr. R. Robertson) and had only been ill for a few days. She entered the hospital suffering from pneumonia, but heart trouble supervened, and she passed away despite all possible care and attention. A sad feature of the occurrence was the fact that her husband had only returned home on the previous Saturday after having undergone an operation in Perth, and was still in a weak state of health at the time of his wife's death. The late Mrs. Robertson took a great interest in the affairs of the community, among whom her lot had been cast, and was highly respected by all with whom she came in contact. She was born in Fifeshire (Scotland) on April 30th, 1874, and was married to Mr. Robertson on February 26, 1896, coming to Western Australia with him and their son (Mr. Charles Robertson) on May 14th, just seventeen years later. Prior to the interment of her remains in the cemetery, which is situated several miles out of town, a service was conducted in the Presbyterian Church by the Rev. J. Barnes, who also officiated at the graveside, where he was assisted by the Rev. S. Lewis. From the church a long cortege comprising over fifty motor vehicles followed the casket to its last resting place, where the attendance was estimated at approximately 350 persons. The chief mourners were Messrs. R. Robertson (husband) and C. Robertson (son), the bereaved husband being present under the care of his medical adviser (Dr. C. P. Rosenthal). The pall bearers were Messrs. Robert Forrester, John Lang, sen., John Bowman, A. A. McGilp, C. W. Turner, A. J. Hollingsworth, G. K. Ryder, A. C. Bierman, J. K. Forrester and N. Graham."

"The Late Mrs. Robertson - News of the death of the late Mrs. R. Robertson, wife of the chairman of the Carnamah Road Board, was received by the members of the Three Springs Road Board during the progress of a meeting on May 14th. The chairman (Mr. E. Hunt) moved a motion expressing the sympathy of the Board with Mr. Robertson, the resolution being carried by members standing in silence. On the day of the funeral the fixtures of the Carnamah Rifle and Carnamah Football Clubs were abandoned as a mark of respect to the deceased lady and her family."
