From The Irwin Index, Friday 28 February 28 1960: Loved Five Gums Resident Dies After Lengthy Illness "Mrs Ethel Mary Gould, who passed away at her home in Five Gums on February 18th after a long illness, was fifty one years of age at the time of her death. She came from Victoria to Carnamah as a bride twenty six years ago and settled with her husband (Mr. A. E. Gould) on his farm at Five Gums, which is 19 miles from Carnamah. It was a big step for a city girl from Melbourne to take, as in those days living conditions in the area were far different from what they are now. There were no refrigerators or modern conveniences, and the mail-man called only once a week. However, the late Mrs Gould proved herself a true member of the community and was always a willing and unselfish worker wherever her services were needed, at home or in the district. C.W.A. Interest. In later years her interests had centred on Three Springs where she was actively concerned with the C.W.A. of which branch she was vice-president for some time before illness caused her to retire from her activities. Mrs Gould is survived by her husband, a son (Alan), and two daughters (Peggy and Margaret).
