Microfilms of England for 1841, 1851, 1871 and 1881 may be ordered through the 'Church of the Latter Day Saints' Libraries. The Libraries in Victoria are 285 Heidelberg Road, Northcote; Cnr. Lane & Pumps Road, Wantirna: and a new library at Wangaratta

CALENDER
Until 1752 "old-style" dating was in use in England. The year began on Lady Day (25th March), so the period from 1st January to 24th March was included in the preceding year. A baptism entered in a register as 14th February, 1733 should therefore read as "14th February, 1733/34"
C.R. Cheney (ed) HANDBOOK OF DATES FOR STUDENTS OF ENGLISH HISTORY (1970) is a useful reference book for all problems of dating.

USEFUL HINT
When searching in various counties of England for any family history or local history - in the State Library are the Victorian County History Books - located in the main Index under the same heading. They are worth having a look at.     Jenny Clutterbuck

Trip to Avoca - by Kevin Vanderstoel
Late last year Betty and myself travelled to Bendigo to attend a Genealogical Seminar. Among the guest speakers was Helen Harris who spoke  on interesting gravestonews she has photographed during her travels.
She has produced a very interesting book about  cemeteries called "Grave Reflections". Helen has done a lot of cemetery transcriptions around the Avoca area, and as some of my ancestors came from that area, I spoke to her during a break in the Seminar. I discovered she is secretary of the Avoca Historical society, of which I am now a member. This Society produces a monthly Newsletter called the Pyrenees Pioneers" which mentions names that people are researching and also items from old Newspapers. A few weekends ago they held an Exhibition of old photographs and had copies of old Newspapers for perusal. I travelled down to the Exhibition and found it was well worthwhile as there were two separate photos of old Hotels at Amphitheatre and Avoca which were taken at the time they were owned by my great-grandfather. One of their members is a photographer and will take copies of any old photos.
Several members have taken on specific tasks to research, i.e. Hotels, Post Offices and Railway Stations in the area.

International Genealogical Index
The following is an explanation of the I.G.I. Index, when visiting an L.D.S. Church, look up your ancestors by -

1. Name of Country e.g. England
2. Name of County e.g. Cornwall
3. Surname of your ancestor in alphabetical order e.g. Mellow
Select the fiche, e.g.
c = christening
m = marriage
b = birth
d = death
Last five columns - Baptish, E endowment, S sealing or marriages, Batch No. Serial No.

In Batch No. column, in front of the number is a small letter C, P, M, TT, E or A followed by a number. e.g. 7505626 '75' means 1975 - 056 means 56th day of the year when the member submitted that information.
If number commences with 7 and third number is less than 4, as 750 it means that this entry was submitted by member of the church, probably on family group sheet. Copy Batch number and last two digets of Serial Number.

M, C or P in front of Batch Number means it came from control Extraction Program, taken from parish records or whatever records they were, names are processed through Temple and will show on next I.G.I. TT means royal lineage, E & A means archives of the L.D.S. Church.

If the entry was submitted by a patron - Order that film (using batch number). The film that arrives will give you the patron's name and address. Write to the patron who may be researching the same person as yourself.

There is a new library of the Church of Latter Day Saints at 45 Garnett Ave, Wangaratta - Phone 215486. Their Library includes the I.G.I. (1984 edition), Family Registry Index, Pre 1900 B.D.& M. Indexes for N.S.W., Q'LD., and W.A.  The Library is open by appointment only. If writing for assistance include a Pedigree Chart and a donation.

The Scottish Genealogy Society
Tracing your ancestor in Scotland - The Principal records of help to those tracing their family history in Scotland are housed centrally in Edinburgh. The registers of births, marriages and beaths, and the census returns, are in New Register House, off Princes Street. These may be consulted by enquirers for a fee; extracts of specific information may be provided by post on application to the Registrar General. Other records, such as testements and records of heritable property, are in the Scottish Record Office in the adjacent Old Register House and also in West Register House, Charlotte Square. Enquirers living at a distance may avail themselves of the services of a professional researcher. (Names and addresses can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary)

Registration of births, marriages and deaths only became compulsory in Scotland in 1855. Before that date, records were kept locally in the parishes and those that have been preserved are in the New Register House. These old parish registers vary in quantity and quality; a few  go back to the 16th. century but most do not go back as far. They are arranged by parish and the bulk of these are as yet unindexed, so that a search for an individual from "Scotland", i.e. without knowing from which particular area, may not prove feasible.
