Include a stamped addressed envelope when writing in Australia. Remember the receiver is not obliged to answer back. When writing overseas you must include 3 International Stamp Coupons (from the Post Office) or two of their own stamps (from special stamp shops i.e. Max Stern, Port Phillip Arcade, Melbourne). Be brief, but include all relevant information. Leave 1¼" margin when writing to the G.S.V. for filing purposes. Keep and file copies of all your letters. Cemeteries There are 920 cemeteries in Victoria. The three Societies (G.S.V., A.I.G.S. and The Latter Day Saints) are indexing the tombstones and registers transcribed by groups like ours. These cards can be checked when you are in Melbourne.
Certificates The Birth Death and Marriage Certificates from the Government Statist can be a valuable asset to your research. When filling out the forms, give all the information you have, but they are very helpful if you only have the bare facts. Collating and Filing Preserve all your finds in Copy-Safe plastic covers, manila folders, expanding file system, alphabet phone book to carry round easily, and file them YOUR way. No two systems are the same. Name and date all photos and finds. MUSEUM OF EMIGRATION IN LIVERPOOL This museum is developing a major international
maritime museum on Liverpool's historic waterfront. One of the most important
objectives will be to tell the story of the thousands of Europeans who
passed through the Port of Lverpool during the 19th and 20th centuries
on their way to make a new life in the United States, Canada, Australia
and New Zealand. It is hoped to incorporate an 'emigration bureau' to assist
visitors with preliminary enquiries into how their ancestors may have started
their journey indicating the main source both here and in in their home
countries which may help piece the story together.
