AN EPIDEMIC

It is reported that a very contagious ailment is going around called Genealogy Pox.

Symptoms

- complaints as to the need for names, dates and places.
- patients have blank expressions and are deaf to spouse and children.
- have no taste for housework, except to look through records at libraries and courthouses.
- have compulsion to write letters, then swear at the mailman if he does not leave mail.
- are found wandering around cemeteries, ruins and remote areas.
Treatment
- is useless - just leave the patient alone in a quiet corner. the disease isn't fatal, but gets progressively worse. The sicker the patient gets, the more he/she enjoys it.

'IN SEARCH OF A BETTER WAY'  by Aubrey Harris
'In Search of a Better Way' is a family history about John Harris and his descendants, covering a period between 1841 - 1984. John Harris was born in Barnstaple, Devon and migrated to Melbourne from Bristol in 1841

The reader is acquainted with farming life in the 1850's commencing at Mailor's Flat in the Western District and later to the north of the state at Swan Hill. Photographs of descendants (covering many generation), homes, certificates, headstones, farm machinery and other documents such as school registers and shipping records combine to familiarize the reader with the Harris family

"In Search of a Batter Way' is a wonderful family history which expands on the early history in Victoria making it a valuable resource. Our thanks for his donation to our Library.

Sources at the Cornwall Record Office
Parish Registers  The registers of baptisms, marriages and burials constitute the main sources of family history before 1837. There are 257 parishes in Cornwall, of which about 220 have deposited registers at the GRO

Bishops Transcripts  These are contemporary copies of the parish registers. Usually Cornish Bishops transcripts are split between the C.R.O. and Devon Record Office.

Probate Records  Wills and administrations of the Archdeaconry of Cornwall 1600-1857 are available at the C.R.O. Those for peculiars of the Bishop and Dean and Chapter of Exeter (28 parishes) were destroyed in the last war.

Census Returns  Microfilm copies of the Cornwall census returns of 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 are held at the C.R.O. There is a charge of £1 for each reel consulted. Copies of returns for 1881 are held at the Local Studies Library, Redruth.

Other Records  A number of 19th and 20th Century Registers for Methodist and other denominations have been deposited. No Roman Catholic registers are held.

Postal and Telephone Enquiries.
Staff can only give a limited time to each enquiry. Searches of records can only be undertaken for payment. Send s.a.e. for details.

Certified Copies of entries in baptism, burial and pre 1837 marriage registers held can be supplied at £2 each. Certificate from post 1837 marriage registers can be issued at £5 each. Full details of parish, date, etc. must be given. Please do not send any remittance until
an invoice has been received.

C's for thought

Conversation  Speak, copy, record, any and all information you can gather from friends, relatives, officials, books, photos, newspaper clippings, old Bibles, address books etc.

Correspondence  Write to anybody you feel you may be able to help you in your quest. Include a stamped addressed envelope when writing in Australia.  Remember the receiver is not obliged to answer back. When writing overseas you must include 3 International Stamp Coupons (from the Post Office) or two of their own stamps (from special stamp shops i.e. Max Stern, Port Phillip Arcade, Melbourne). Be brief, but include all relevant information. Leave 1¼" margin when writing to the G.S.V. for filing purposes. Keep and file copies of all your letters.

Cemeteries  There are 920 cemeteries in Victoria. The three Societies (G.S.V., A.I.G.S. and The Latter Day Saints) are indexing the tombstones and registers transcribed by groups like ours. These cards can be checked when you are in Melbourne.

Certificates The Birth Death and Marriage Certificates from the Government Statist can be a valuable asset to your research. When filling out the forms, give all the information you have, but they are very helpful if you only have the bare facts. "No Record Result" means the books have been checked by two archivists, and you have to re-think the problem.

The costs at October 1984 are:

$18.00  for a full certificate from now to 75 years ago
$10.00 for a full certificate from 75 years backwards
Half price for an EXTRACT, but these are not recommended, unless you are searching in the dark. Also half price if you have their registration number. Remember the staff will search for 5 years for your money, i.e. if you state one year, they will look two years before and two years later, or state the five years 1871, 72, 73, 74, 75.

Courage and Patience  These you will learn to handle as you progress.

Collating and Filing  Preserve all your finds in Copy-Safe plastic covers, manila folders, expanding file system, alphabet phone book to carry round easily, and file them YOUR way. No two systems are the same. Name and date all photos and finds.

MUSEUM OF EMIGRATION IN LIVERPOOL

This museum is developing a major international maritime museum on Liverpool's historic waterfront. One of the most important objectives will be to tell the story of the thousands of Europeans who passed through the Port of Lverpool during the 19th and 20th centuries on their way to make a new life in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is hoped to incorporate an 'emigration bureau' to assist visitors with preliminary enquiries into how their ancestors may have started their journey indicating the main source both here and in in their home countries which may help piece the story together.
In particular to establish any 'case studies' of the reasons which led the families to emigrate from Europe, their experience in transit (if known) and how their lives were developed once they reached their destination. If any families or members of local societies whose ancestors passed through Liverpool on the outward journey, Merseyside County Council would like to hear from you.
