There is increased interest in this event because the declaration of war was made 100 years ago on the 16th of October 1899. Interested members can find a useful outline of the War in The South Australian Genealogist: Vol. 6 No. 23, August Edition. Whilst there is some emphasis on the South Australian perspective a good description of the events leading to the War is on offer.Parish Registers
Family Tree Magazine July 1999 P. 7. Contains a detailed description of the problems to be encountered when researching UK Parish registers. Excellent for the UK 'junkie' who wants to understand influences on the survival of registers; how names can be mis-spelt and why date abnormalities exist.English Church Courts
Looking for an English will prior to 1858? Try the English Church Court records. An outline of their role, structure and the problems they offer as a source of research can be found in Family Tree Magazine July 1999Do you need to see an undertaker?
Can't find an ancestors grave site? Try 'The Undertaker'. Ancestor: Vol. 24, No. 7 Spring 1999 p.2 which explains that undertakers today hold the remains of many individuals who chose to be cremated. Relatives are expected to collect the ashes but many fail to do so with the result that undertakers hold the ashes of a great number of individuals. Read more about it in Ancestor.Whilst on Undertakers
Check out details of the Mortuary Industry and how Genealogists need to be familiar with its workings in Ancestor: Vol. 24, No. 7 Spring 1999 p.10. An article by Catherine Kesik of the P.R.O. provides a detailed description of all you need to know.Public Record Office
As we all know significant changes are in the wind for the operation of Public records for Victoria. The main influence will be the transfer of Laverton to North Melbourne. There will be considerable disruption. If you plan to use the office from March 2000 to 2002 you need to read this article carefully. It can be found in the Ancestor: Vol. 24, No. 7 Spring 1999 p.11.The Future of Genealogy
Francis Brown has been the genealogy Librarian at the State Library for many years. She reflects on where research is leading. If you want to be up with the shape of things to come, her article in the Ancestor: Vol. 24, No. 7 Spring 1999 p. 15 is a must. Read her view on how the Internet and Email will influence our research strategies. Any organization planning to resource its genealogical members should also take careful notice of Francis' foresight.Wills
Do you have trouble understanding the terminology? For example: What is the difference between a will and a testament? Try the Ancestor: Vol. 24, No. 7 Spring 1999 p.23.Just Stuff
We all have genealogical material "lying around". Don't we? This is the stuff of Edward Gaulin's article in the Ancestor: Vol. 24, No. 7 Spring 1999 p. 30. Now that you have collected it all, what happens to it when you become one of the researched (an ancestor). Does it get thrown out like everything that you have already mourned as an unnecessary loss or does it pass down systematically for others to use? Find out how to go about passing your findings on to others.
P.S. Do you carefully record the source of your information at all times? Without it, others will have to go over ground which you have already covered. In other words, information without its source listed is almost valueless.Mormon Depositories at Salt Lake City.
