From the President ... As it's only a month since the A.G.M. and my appointment as President, there's not a great deal to report.
.
Members enjoyed the A.G.M. meal at the Lazy River, so the Committee has decided that this will also be the venue for our December Christmas meal. Details regarding booking and payment are elsewhere in the Newsletter.
.
Some members seem to have forgotten to renew their membership. Could you please do this immediately. Our insurance payment is based on the number of members, so we need to have an accurate record. Put your cheque in the mail ($20 single, $25 family), if you're unable to get into our room in the Library.
.
•We have been able to replace 11 of the 13 missing Pioneer microfiche. Unfortunately the other two are unavailable. Thank you to Julie Nix for organising the replacement. Let us hope that nothing of the kind ever happens again. A great deal of your subs. money goes towards research materials, such as books and fiche, so it's disappointing that someone would selfishly inconvenience other members like this. Having said that, keep a look out for new research material, passed for purchase at the October meeting. This should be arriving over the next month or two.
..
Guest speaker at the October meeting was Leighton Donovan from the Rivers and Riverboats Historical and Preservation Society. This small group has put in a tremendous amount of time and money rescuing sunken paddlesteamers and barges from the river. It was fascinating to hear of the techniques and old tools which they are using.
.
The book on the 100 years since Federation in the Murray-Mallee country, for which the Society received a Centenary of Federation Grant, is in the hands of the printer. It will be launched at the Australia Day Breakfast. We need volunteers to sell it on the day. Could you add your name to the list on the notice board in our room if you are able to help. This will be your chance to pick up your own signed copy as well. The print run is only 3000 and we expect that they will go quickly.
The book is mainly photographs and there are over 1700 names in the index so some of them could be your ancestors.
