A new bench has been fitted into our room and looks great.  Thanks to Rob and Jamie Whateley for the building and fitting, also Jim and Judy for their help in setting things up.

We also recently purchased a new computer for our room and when we can manage we will purchase CDs, as they become available.  Please follow our list of guidelines carefully to ensure the computer runs smoothly at all times.  Any queries please ask a member on duty or contact a committee member.

MICROFICHE REPORT

Latest additions to the Library:

I am extremely disappointed to announce the strange "disappearance" of 13 of our Pioneer Microfiche.  As these will be very hard to replace I appeal for their return, if this does not happen the Committee may have to reconsider research privileges.  Our 150 members all pay for the right to research and are able to take the fiche home for the weekend.

SWAN HILL REGIONAL LIBRARY NEWS

Family Search Computer: (located in the Heritage Room)

The following CD-Roms have now been installed to the "Family Search" computer:

* Family History Source Guide
* Inquest Index Victoria 1840 - 1985
* VITAC Records Index - British Isles;  North America
* British Census & National Index
Zaetta Collection:

     The Library has ordered a scanner and CD Writer, which should arrive before the end of August.  This equipment will be used as a priority to re-format the Zaetta collection of historical negatives currently in storage at the rear due to their deteriorating condition.

     The condition of the collection is such that the Library will be using unspent grant funding to purchase the equipment, and so that the scanning and electronic storage of images can begin almost immediately.

     The scanner and writer will also be used for local history projects within the Library, including the Society.  They will be particularly useful for copying donated or loaned items, with the intention to make some or all of the Library's images available either on the Internet or via loanable CD-Rom's.

GST Charges:
     GST charges will only affect some of the services offered by the library (including book purchases, disks purchased for use with internet/word processing, fax charges, replacement borrower's cards etc).  Prints from the "Family Search" computer will remain at 5 cents per sheet and microfilm will also remain at 20 cents per sheet (to be reviewed at a later date).  Inter library loan fees will remain at $2.00 per book (borrowed from another public library) or $14.00 per book (borrowed from an academic library). Photocopying charges will remain the same with any GST charges being absorbed by the library.

New Internet Computers:
     The library now has three new internet computers, which makes a total of four internet terminals for the public to use (although we are only booking three at the moment as we are waiting for the final one to be networked).  The internet is free to use but must be booked in advance.  Due to demand the maximum booking is for one hour per day.  Disks may be purchased for $1.10 per disk and prints remain at 20 cents per sheet.
