3. CHURCH PARISH RECORDS AND HISTORIES
|
PARISH RECORDS Church baptism, marriage and burial records are largely available at the AOT. Search http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/default.aspx?search=1 for their holdings (eg enter the words <<Bothwell baptism>> to find out the holdings of Bothwell baptismal records at the AOT). A guide is kept on the front counter in the AOT search room and this is probably easier to use. TFHS and Launceston Reference Library, Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery, Community History Museum Inveresk Launceston, Catholic Archdiocese of Hobart Museum-Archives and individual Churches also hold some church parish records. Certain parish records have been indexed and published in books as an on-going project and these are available commercially and at certain libraries. See http://www.tasfamily.net.au/ and follow the links to 'bookshop' and then 'indexes'. Alex Buchanan's book "Index to Tasmanian Births/Baptisms 1803-1840" (1991) calls upon some sources not included in the Tasmanian Pioneers Index and is worth seeking out if you are chasing an elusive baptism. |
