MT LYELL MINE AND MINE DISASTER 1912

In October 1912 a fire burnt through the mine and this site lists the names of the 42 fatalities. http://www.rootsweb.com/~austas/mtlyell.htm. EMPLOYEE RECORDS AND CERTIFICATES ETC.

MUSEUMS AND HERITAGE CENTRES

The West Coast Heritage Centre in Zeehan, incorporating the Pioneers Memorial Museum has a large collection of photographs and displays on the history of the west coast, its towns , industries and people, as well as a world class collection of minerals. WEST COAST BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, DEATHS AND BURIALS

The Zeehan and Dundas Herald was published from about 1890 to 1922 and covered much of the west coast during the 'mining boom'. B,D & Ms have been indexed and published by the Burnie Branch of the Tasmanian Family History Society (2 volumes) and this can be found in many libraries, or for purchase at: http://www.hobart.tasfhs.org/sales.htm.

Current cemeteries are at Queenstown, Strahan, Rosebery and Zeehan; Pioneer Cemeteries are at Zeehan, Queenstown and Linda/Gormanston. The West Coast Council manages all of these and holds some records on the Pioneer cemeteries; http://www.westcoast.tas.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=276. There is also the TAMIOT: (Tombstones and Memorial Inscriptions of Tasmania) index on microfiche which is available at many genealogical centres and libraries.
