 9.  WILLS

9.1

START HERE! AOT INDEX

Wills are good sources for the names, occupations and localities of relations of the person writing the will. Wills and Letters of Administration prior to 1995 are held at the AOT and an on-line index is being progressively extended and can be found here: http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=9

The most accessible items are the copies of the wills made for probate which are on microfilm and the references for these are given on the on-line index. The AOT can make copies of these and post them out for their standard fees here: http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/reference/fees

9.2

SUPREME COURT

Wills are first lodged at the Supreme Court and ones lodged after 1995 will be found there, not the AOT. Information on this can be found at http://www.courts.tas.gov.au/supreme/wills/wills_contents.htm

9.3

LANDS DEPARTMENT

The Lands Department hold copies of Wills pertaining to the transfer of land at their Deeds archive at Macquarie Street, Hobart (see Section 8.1). If you have evidence that a will exists (and its approximate date), but cannot find it in the Archives Office index, it might be worth looking here. The advantage of this collection is that you can browse the volume containing the will copies - so if one has been mis-indexed or missed entirely you may come across it.
