 9.  WILLS

9.1

START HERE! AOT INDEX AND DIGITISED COPIES OF WILLS ETC.

Wills are good sources for the names, occupations and localities of relations of the person writing the will. Wills and Letters of Administration from 1824 to 1989 are held at the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office in Hobart. An index of the Archives' holdings is searchable here: http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=9. Copies of the wills and letters of administration which were transcribed by Probate Registry staff into registers (Series AD960 and AD961 only) have been digitised, and by following the link after a search, you can bring up and save an image of the will or letter of administration etc.

9.2

SUPREME COURT

Wills are first lodged at the Supreme Court and ones lodged after 1995 will be found there, not the AOT. Information on this can be found at http://www.supremecourt.tas.gov.au/wills__and__probate.

9.3

LANDS DEPARTMENT

The Lands Department hold copies of Wills pertaining to the transfer of land at their Deeds archive at Macquarie Street, Hobart (see Section 8.1). If you have evidence that a will exists (and its approximate date), but cannot find it in the Archives Office index, it might be worth looking here. The advantage of this collection is that you can browse the volume containing the will copies - so if one has been mis-indexed or missed entirely you may come across it.
