When researching in Austria, there are several courses of action that you could/should take:

• The tradional, primary genealogical research
  e.g. obtaining records of birth, marriage, death from the respective church (but to do this, you will generally have to know the exact parish), searching through archives and libraries, maybe also using LDS-FHC resources (rather limited for some parts of Austria), etc.

• Internet-supported research
  i.e. trying to find others that are researching the same family, trying to find records of the surname somewhere in the Internet, etc. The following is intended as a check list; give it a try:

Index of Facilities General Web Searches - search engines, meta searches, indices, etc. Place Finders - gazetteers, maps, encyclopedia, etc. Surname Searches - genealogical databases, surname resources, etc. Ships, Passenger Lists & Immigration - Ellis Island Online Database, Mailing Lists, etc. Searching for Living Persons - phone directories, e-mail direcories, etc. Austrian Surname Searches - Austria-specific records and directories, etc.

	SurnameHelper - a database complied from a multitude of sources, including all the GenConnect postings worldwide (which are indexed once a week).

	GeneaNet Database - a large, free database of GEDCOM files with a user interface in many languages. Very targeted searches on surnames and a combination of criteria such as place, date ranges, etc.
FEEFHS	FEEFHS - The Federation of East European Family History Societies has vast amounts of data related to central and eastern Europe that can be searched online.

	The Family Tree Maker - is a commercial site but it has a wealth of user sites and home pages.
	GenForum - is part of the Family Tree Maker system and has many surname postings
	GenealogyPortal.com - GenealogyPortal.com is a joint project of Steve Wood (The Genealogy Home Page) and Matthew Helm (Helm's Genealogy Toolbox)
	genealogy.com - genealogy.com ties together various sites such as FTM, Genealogy SiteFinder, GenForum, etc.
GENDEX	GENDEX - WWW Genealogical Index by Gene Stark with over eight million names. Limited free access.
	Ancestry.com - commercial but with limited free access. Thousands of databased to be searched.

 

 

Searching for Living Persons
	BigFoot - a directory of e-mail addresses and phone numbers.
	The WhoWhere? - people finder by Lycos.
	About.com - provides a useful guide and many links to help you trace living individuals.
	Telephone Directories on the Web - provides an index of online phone books, with over 400 links to Yellow Pages, White Pages, Business Directories, Email Addresses and Fax Listings from over 170 countries all around the world.
	Deja.com [Google] - provides provides a vast searchable database of newsgoup posting. Check this for e-mail addresses.
