The historic Apache Trail, northeast of Apache Junction, AZ, winds through some of the most rugged terrain in Arizona, from the Four Peaks Wilderness Area in the north to the Superstition Wilderness Area in the south.

The trail includes Lost Dutchman State Park, Tonto National Forest, Roosevelt Dam, and a ghost town, Goldfield, which is now a commercialized tourist site reminiscent of an old mining town.  Tonto National Monument is also located near Roosevelt Lake, shown above.  There are cliff dwellings built and occupied by prehistoric Salado people of the 14th century.
