Dry Lake Chapter was formed April 15, 2000, with fifteen organizing members. We continue to grow, seeking out new members, meeting monthly September-May, on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Our schedule occasionally varies, due to member participation in community activities.
Our organizing members named Dry Lake Chapter for the roughly heart-shaped, 90 square mile dry lake bed which is a unique geographical feature located toward the northern end of the 1,500 square mile Sulphur Springs Valley in Cochise County, Arizona. In satellite photos, the Dry Lake stands out as a dominant landmark.
The vast alkali dry lake bed is one of the few places in the world with a permanent mirage. At times the mirage "water" seems to reflect sailboats, ranch buildings with tall cotton-wood trees, entire towns, and herds of cattle. The one feature which is not a mirage is the railroad line which is built across the Dry Lake. Visitors are caught off guard when they see the lake with a mile-long freight train stretching out across the surface of the water.
