Grave Registration Example

Maxwell gravesite before cleanup

In August 2010, Camp 1708 Chaplain Larry Hammack found the gravesite of Private Manchester Maxwell in the Citizen Cemetery, Flagstaff, Coconino County, Arizona.  The grave has a headstone that does not mention his military service.  The grave site is surrounded by a cast iron fence of which the east panel had been broken off laying on top of the exposed vault lid.    Shortly after June 2011 when photos of the gravesite with the 1st National flag were posted on the Find a Grave website Chaplain Hammack was contacted by Teresa Tillman, a grandniece of Manchester Maxwell, who thanked the SCV for marking and recognizing his service.

Jefferson Davis Marker Ceremony
The Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway marker near Gold Canyon Arizona was recently planned to be moved.  A number of SCV members and members of the UDC participated in discussions to insure the marker would remain a permament fixture on Highway 60.  Some of those present for a recent ceremony at the marker are shown above.

The Memorial marker is located just east of mile marker 204 and at the exit on a junction of a proposed bypass to be developed around Gold Canyon. This monument was originally near Duncan installed in the 1940s by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It is a part of a chain of monuments stretching across the South along the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway. It was moved to its present location in 1962.
