Picacho Peak State Park celebrated the 150th year with a reenactment of the
battle fought there. The SCV maintained a booth providing information
to those attending. The park had their largest ever crowd attend this
year. SCV members shown are, left to right, Curt Tipton, Kevin Brown,
John Potenza, unknown , and Matthew Aparicio. The picture was taken at the
SCV booth at Picacho Peak with thanks to Matt Aparicio.
The webmaster is sorry that the name of the individual shown 2nd from the
right is unknown. He is a member of a Camp in southern Arizona.
If you know his name, please let the
webmaster know so I can add his name to the list above.

The Camp inducted two new members at it's regular meeting on March 8, 2012.
Shown here is Camp Commander Kevin Brown, center, presenting their
membership certificates to the new members following the swearing in
ceremony. Jim Gibson is on the left and Kris Porter on the right.
Welcome gentlemen!
In August 2010, Camp 1708 Chaplain Larry Hammack found the gravesite of
Private Manchester Maxwell in the Citizen Cemetery, Flagstaff, Coconino
County, Arizona. The grave has a headstone that does not mention his
military service. The grave site is surrounded by a cast iron fence of
which the east panel had been broken off laying on top of the exposed vault lid.
Shortly after June 2011 when photos of the gravesite with the 1st
National flag were posted on the Find a Grave website
Chaplain Hammack was contacted by Teresa Tillman, a grandniece of Manchester
Maxwell, who thanked the SCV for marking and recognizing his service.
In September 2011 George Reece and Larry Hammack traveled to
Flagstaff to cleaned the grave site and made repairs to the fence while replacing
the flag.

Camp 1708 and Camp 1744 signed a certificate and presented it to Bill Stump who came here from
Kentucky. Commander Fred Wilhite of camp 1744 said it was a good time & Bill was just
overwhelmed by our show of support for him during a tough time...He looked pretty good for
being so sick. Bill passed away a few days later.

On the right, Larry Hammack is shown presenting a Middle School program on
the Civil War on Friday, 9/23/2011, at the Skyline Gila River D5 Middle
School. The camp had a display of artifacts, and presented the program
with re-enactors Larry and Carter Powers. Both of whom did a fine job
and the program was well received by the kids.
Below left are shown some of the students attending the presentation. Below on the right is Carter Powers listening intently to a student's question.
A reporter from the Gila River Indian News (GRIN) also attended and took pictures for their newspaper. See below for newspaper article.
Camp 1708 members attending the 2011 Arizona Division Convention are show at
left. They are from left to right, Marc Fentress, Kevin Brown, Fred
Baumack, George Reece, John Rogers, Mike Agnew. Could any Camp be
represented by a more distinguished group?

George Reece and Mike Agnew through their contacts with Rebel Yell,
arraigned for the Camp to have a couple of bottles of Rebel Yell for auction
at the Division meeting. The bottles were labeled for the Arizona Division,
SCV. Additionally there were tee shirts and a company gift card for $75.00.
Here George is holding the bucket of tickets for someone to draw a winner.

Memorial Day Celebration in Mesa City Cemetery on April 16, 2011. Some
of the ladies from Chapter 966 of the UDC attending the Celebration are
shown on the right.
Following the Celebration at the cemetery, the UDC ladies of Chapter 966
hosted a luncheon for everyone at Coco's restaurant.

On the left are members from 2 different SCV Camps that attended the UDC
luncheon.
On the right are the re-enactors attending the Confederate Memorial Day
Celebration.

Camp 1708 presented a program on The War Between The States (Civil War) to
approximately 150 third grade students at the Wildfire Elementary School in
Paradise Valley. Camp Members Larry
Hammack, Bookard Dooley, Ron Fox, and Commander Marc Fentress participated. On
the left is Ron Fox in Yankee gear and Larry Hammack in the bottom left
corner. Bookard Dooley is on the right.
On Sept. 15, 2011, Larry Hammack gave talk to 5th and 6th graders at the
Edu-Prize School, Gilbert, AZ, on the War between the States in the
Southwest. Students asked a lot of questions and the program was well
received.
