History of the Arizona State Society Daughters of the American Revolution

Arizona was not even a state when Eliza Price Ainsworth set out on her mission to establish the Territory's first chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Assisted by Henrietta Hubbard Talbot, she spent the next two years passing out applications and informational materials. Her dreams came true on 19 April 1902 when under the shade of towering palm trees, a small group of women chartered the Arizona State Society. That day was to be only the beginning of many years of service to the community and future state by Daughters.

The Arizona State Society, which would later evolve into the Maricopa Chapter, was instrumental in establishing the Phoenix Public Library and the First Presbyterian Church. Members gathered to study the history of the Revolutionary War and hosted social events commemorating the dates of important battles. Members worked to have memorial markers placed on the graves of pioneers and along the National Old Trails Road in Northern Arizona. Joint dinners were held with the Sons of the American Revolution at which patriotic toasts were exchanged.

Arizona became a state in 1912, and as its population grew, so did the Society. In 1915 a second chapter was organized in Tucson.
