Our Chapter's Activities
Tombstone Chapter works as a group and individually with the following projects and organizations:
| Historical Soldiers Relocation Project During the years 1860 to 1886, men from many states joined the Army as cavalry, infantry, and Indian scouts to protect the settlers coming to the West. Due to the passage of time, their cemetery disappeared under a parking lot in Tucson, Arizona and their history was lost to the current generations. More than a century later, while digging to prepare for new construction, the remains were discovered. These brave soldiers deserved a proper reburial. | ||
| A Victorian-era style cemetery was built within the Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, located in our home town of Sierra Vista, AZ. On May 15, 2008, motorcycle escort riders, from many different civic organizations throughout Arizona and New Mexico, accompanied the remains of the 61 coffins for the seventy-five mile journey to the new cemetery. The following morning, a special ceremony was held with great fanfare and support to rebury the remains of 57 soldiers, three children and an Army civilian employee. There were over 500 attendees, including government officals from the state and local levels, DAR daughters from many chapters in Arizona, as well as townspeople and reenactors, some in period dress. | ||
| Each grave was marked with a marble headstone in the style of the 1880s. They were created especially to pay tribute, and provide an educational history of these men, which included their military life and territorial occupations. Tombstone Chapter and the Arizona State Society supported this project to help ensure that this vital piece of our national history becomes part of our educational and historical fabric. |
