The Rough Riders, comprised of troops from Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, and led by Teddy Roosevelt, garnered fame through their exploits at the San Juan Hills. Yavapai County figures prominently in Rough Rider history as county sheriff Buckey O'Neill was a primary organizer and fallen war hero.
