William De Jeanne b January 25 was in Oxford as a student but at 19
years of age was expelled for non conformity which of course meant he
could not subscribe in every particular to the religious tenets of the
college. Quite early in life he was considered disloyal in his
sentiments toward the King. In 1652 he was resident of Monmouthshire,
and joined Cromwells's Army. He became his Chaplain. At that time he
had a wife and three sons, later his wife died. As the years passed,
England became a very uncomfortable place for those of his views and
in 1670, leaving his three grown sons behind he sought refuge in New
Haven where he remarried some time. He took the name of Jayne which
has since been the name of his descendants. A cousin of William de
Jeanne took the name of Janes so the Jaynes and the Janes of this
country came from the same original stock. In 1675 William Jayne
married Annie Brigs probably of New Haven and with some 13 or 15
others they crossed over to what is now the town of Brook Haven, it
being about one third of Long Island. They purchased land from the
Indians, but it could not be divided until the Indian titles were
perfected. This occurred in 1678 and 4 'long lots' and 4 lots in town
were set aside to William Jayne. Benjamin Jayne of New York and his
nephews, were in 1907, still living on the old place and the grave
stones of the sons of the first settlers were still to be found. (From
