The Archives has papers, maps, books, photos, journals, film, video, cassettes etc. Subjects collected are from the trade era beginning 1812 through to the gold rush, overlanders, mining, ranching, railway, Victorian period, military, and twentieth century. Materials are also collected for neighbouring towns which have no museum or archives.

The Archives of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies covers the region bounded by the 49th Parallel (south), Peace River (north), Front Ranges (east), and the Columbia Mountains (west). The Archives maintains a comprehensive library on the region and also administers the library of the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC).
