1859 Log Book
Royal Naval Dockyard Prison
The following transcript was generously contributed by Evelyn L Glenn in December 1999. The transcript was taken from an old leather log book dated 1859. It had been torn and many pages damaged by mold and a child’s scribbling. Difficult-to-read entries were placed in parentheses.

They got in the gun store & many of them got drunk & this is how it came out what they intended to do was to murder the soldiers & crew and take the ship to America then wond Capt and his wife and to the 26th rgt with them. Then intended to murder him and keep his wife. Lots for her & a day (2 words-Pri time?) after. |

The whole of the prisoners were going to break out of the Midway & murder the officers, but on Saturday noon Governor Murrey & Capt Pasco came on bord and had the 26th rgt inf (ness?), the they flogged 9. 6 receved 24 lashes, 2 receved 50 and 1 receved 40, not being able to receive the other 10. |

As soon as the muster was over the Irish again atackted the English. There were several injured & be taken to the hospital. 3 of the ring leaders were sent to Boaz Island to work in irons & 2 got 7 days in the hole. In the evening the Irish made another atacked on the English, 5 were locked up. Sunday the 1st of May 59, they mustered the men and let only 1 deck of men up at a time for only hour walk on the brakewater. They then clear the brakewater. Locked the men up & let another deck lot up and did all day.
On Tuesday 3 moor of the ringleader were sent to Boaz Island to work in irons. Thir names is Dooley, Caine, Fitzmarice, Glennon, Gill, & Calachan. Then thir were 5 or 6 moor put in the lock up for a few days and then let out.
A man received 75 lashes for striking Mr Fisk on the head with a pick handle about the 4th of May 59 at Boaz Island.
Prisoners fighting May 28th/59. The prisoners that were taken to Boaz Island and put in irons on the 29th April last for a murderis assult on the English men. All sent back to the Midway again. On the 31st Fitzmarice was tranceford to the Tenedors & when told he was to go he said he would not go and put them all in defience. He was lovked up for the night & the next day was sent to Boaz Island. On Wed 1st of June 59 about 4 in the after noon there was a row in the deckyard among the Irish and English. They were discord. Sent a bard with broken heads & when the gang come in 4 about one half of them was abord. A shout was given by the Irish & they went at it with (kims/kives/knives?) & anything they could lay their hands on. There was one prisoner the name of (Lavis/Lewis?) kild. He was stabbed to the heart in the order dick by prisoner McNamarra a lad about 17 old. When another prisoner named Kinnar, an old man held him. Then 4 or 5 moor expect to die but things recovered. There were 25 sent to the hospital & 5 in the sick bay. The names of them will be tride for the murder is Marrice, Ryan, Fitzgerald, Brise, Heffins, McNammarrow and Denner. The witnesses names is Park, Blackman, and Yarnold. Roberts, (Subistin) and Walsh were in irons for a short time for the row in the dock yard. About the 9th of Nov 59, the prsoners were tried for the murder. McNammarow and Kinner were found guilty of murder & the 5 others discharged. Sum months after they were sent to England & what be came of them after we do not know.
Flinn received 50 lashes for striking Warden Pasley at the timardos on Sat 11th June 59.
5 prisoners received 36 lashes for refusing to take there fellow prisoner from Boaz Island to the (Tuns…?) Hulk where they had to sleep. On the 5th Aug 59.
Prisoner Thomas Feb 21st /59. I was going out with the prisoners to the dock yard whan 2686 Thomas fell out of his party. I ordered him back- he did not com back. After breaking my party of 8- went where the prisoner was & he met me & said what the hell are so down on me this morning for. I don’t care a dam for you- who the hell do you think you are talking to. Do you think you are talking to a bluddy thief.- damd my eyes I am a good a man as you are. You may go an report me if you like- I will fix you. You may take me a bord if you like. What the hell do I care for you do you think he gut a paultery 14 days. Grog & pay.
Kild on Sat 16th April 59. In the quarry prisoner 2813 A Lockwood, knocked down 3239 W Cocaran and delt him a kick when he was down which kilt him on the spot. The qurrey Medick was man slarter and he was taken to Hamilton jale by Mr Carbolt and Mr carson to awate his trile on Wednesday the 4th May he was aquited.
Mr Neely May 15th/59- prisoner McNeely at Boaz Island knocked Pr Warder Dujelas (Douglas?) down. He is turned over the civil power centence 10 months.
3321 L francis knocked down Chief warder Sims in the dock yard on the 17th August 59. He was tride by the civil power on Thursday 4th he received 50 lashes for threatining Lander. About the 11th November 59 and sentence to 15 years. Escaped during the night of 2 & 3 may 59. 3 prisoners name McBride, Allsop & Sparrow made their escape.
No 656 (name obviously erased) received 36 lashes for inclence to Asst Wardon Harrington on bord the Tenidos on 25th Jan 60.
Prisoner Blackman received 60 lashes on bord the Midway for striking after Warden floged Feb 21st 1860.
Prisoner named Johnson at Boaz Island cut his throat & died the next morning Feb 2? 1860.

In riference to the Comptroller F order of 27th Inst. I have the honor to state that I am desirous to go to Canada & if the means were granted me for removing myself & family of wife and children to the colony I should feel but too grateful. I brg you will kindly submit my request to the comptroller praying him to use his influence in obtaining thi favour for us.
If the above request is not granted I have the honor to state that I shall require a passage to the Untied Kingdon with family as above.
Trusting you will use your influence in my behalf.

"to piarse boots-mutton fat or bushon taller—bees wax-rosan-lampblack-boots---turpentine-mutton fat, bees wax, melt it down and put it on hot rub it well in before a fire.
For cleaner of any metal that is bronze- 4 quarts of water- 1 gill of A Furtos, 20 drops of spirits of salts. Wash of well & dry it befor lackuring. Working shellac into the shakes or defects and then scrape and sandpaper when quite cold.
Should your work be old and been bees waxed get sun-hot vinegar and rub on till all be washed off, then wash with cold water the parts to be polished when dry, sandpaper and slop all imperfections. N(o) 003 Should your work have been "Aurnert" be sure and wipe of your hot vinegar as soon as possible.
For bronze get your mettle quite cleane then put it in pickle, take it out & put in boiling water, then black lead it, put your metal in hoven to get hot before ____Lauren.

Mutiny on bord the Midway the convicts 8 Dec 58.
On the 11th 8 were flogged 7 receved 50 lashes & 7 36. They bring the ringleaders. There names wore Rileys, fitzmorice, Cain, foster, fitzgerald & others.
Mutiny on Tuesday after noons 24th April 59. There was a murder as attacked by the Irish upon the English 3 were locked up next morne she was told who the man was that was to have her after the ship arived. How they sent sum of 26 rgt on bord to relieve the other soldiers who were great worn out there being up night & day. The next day they flogged 7 of the ringleaders.
Seamore Bark from England with Government Stars, Mr Lee & Waller, Caine in her Mr Buttin home with her this (occured?) on the 12th day January 59.
