Allen Temple AME Church
Sandys Parish

Messrs. George Samuel Lambert and Nathaniel Ratteray on behalf of the Church, the pastor, purchased the land for a building site in 1877 at the time being Rev. W. B. Hill. A wooden structure was erected and worship services were held. The first trustees elected were: George Samuel Lambert, Nathaniel Ratteray, Samuel Robert Bean, William Bean, Samuel Lambert, Jr., Alfred Virgil and Thomas Ratteray. The first secretary was Mary Hamilton Seymour Ratteray, daughter of Charles Roach Ratteray, one of the men responsible for inviting Bishop Nazrey to Bermuda.

The September hurricane of 1899 completely destroyed the wooden church. (The Causeway at the East End of the Island was blown away in the same hurricane). The Church continued services in a hall at Ely’s Harbour building, now a two-tenant dwelling.

In 1904 by deed of gift, Mr. Charles Roach Ratteray and wife donated a triangular piece of land adjoining the Church property on the East. Dr. John W. Cann spearheaded the work of rebuilding the Temple and was ably assisted by Joseph Henry Simmons, H. T. K. Smith and Gregstone Bean.
