Notebook of Daniel Robert Tucker
Hamilton, Bermuda, 17 August 1856
Robt. Alex. Tucker Esq.
On the 5th inst., a coloured man (a mulatto) who calls himself Charles Potorus, came in to my store. He said he was 6 weeks from California, by way of N York. That he had been about 4 years in California; that he was married to the stewardess of the Eliza Barss 4 years; that about 2 years ago he became acquainted with my son William Hy. He told William before Casey was hung that he intended to visit Bermuda. William told him he would write by him to me; that I may be of service to him. Potorus saw Casey hung; that William was among the Vigilance Committee and had his musket. On that account he left California without seeing William. Potorus left his wife in San Francisco. His wife is a native of Bermuda. If Potorus likes Bermuda, he will bring his wife here and reside. Potorus asked me to take care of about $2300 for him. I told him he had better remit it to Tucker & Lightbourne, N York, and request them to invest it in safe funds in his name. I bo't a Bill for him in my name and endorsed it to him; 484 pounds. Potorus says he owns a house in N York 40 or 50 ft. long by 18 or 20 ft. He gave me a card:
Curry House
164 Church Street
New York
D T Curry, Proprietor That he keeps the building insured for $700. He is concerned with Curry and gets about $600 per year for his proportion of the profits.
Potorus said that during the last 6 or 8 days he had been at St George's, David's Island, Boaz Is., Dock Yard. I offered him a passage to George's Bay. I carried him up to Evan's Bay. I shewed him my Port Royal land--- Paynter's. He liked it very much and if his wife shall approve of it he will give me 500 pounds for it. He also liked George's Bay very much, but preferred Paynter's on account of the quantity of land, and its being more in the way of business. Potorus is coming on in the Penguin to sail in 3 to 4 days.
